Best yet

The style of this book surpasses anything that Mr. Bradshaw has written. In other words, although his other books are nice, his writing style is not fluent. He must have had help perhaps, but this one flows fluently. The quality of the material is earth shattering. Very few books have I read from cover to cover within a week and this one I did. This is something I can go over and over.

Creating the love you want

I have not read all of this but what I have read is very helpful about understanding dynamics of why we continue to live our lives in the past, though we may not know it. He is coming from a place of exposing the shame element and people who come from or understand the 12 step programs will recognize his way of demystifying pain and shame. He is a gentle caring soul who really wants us to understand and reveal ourselves TO ourselves and then be able to move on.

John Bradshaw's literature has been a real help to me. I enjoy his theories and his style of writing. He doesn't overload you with concepts, but really breaks things down and keeps them simple. I recommend this book to anyone, no matter your situation...it will help.

In this account, he tells of visiting bars in Chicago; Hoboken, New Jersey; Greenville, Mississippi; and beyond, recounting conversations and adventures from his somewhat patchwork geographic, as well as personal, journey. Most absorbing are his talks with the locals as they reminisce about the early roots of the jukebox's greatest stars (Frank Sinatra, Patsy Cline, and more). In the process, he intends to bear witness to a bit of Americana rapidly becoming extinct. Jukeboxes saw their heyday several decades ago; now, with the advent of compact discs, stricter laws regarding drinking and driving, and encroaching suburbanization, the roadhouses that were the traditional venue for jukeboxes are, Bunch finds, down on their luck. Nevertheless, with Elvis Presley, Patsy Cline, and Frank Sinatra as his spiritual guides, Bunch travels to Hoboken, hoping to confirm a rumor of an all-Sinatra jukebox; to Chicago and vicinity to meet a guy named Dale Evans, the human jukebox, and to visit the Rock-Ola Manufacturing Corp., where workers once cranked out 125 jukeboxes daily (they're down to 30 or so today); to Greenville, Mississippi, where juke joints rule over jukeboxes; and finally, to Detroit, where, at Honest? I loved Jukebox America. The author makes prose lyrical. It's a fun trip with the Spirit in the Sky, in search of the Juke of the Covenant. Anyone interested in the American musical journey will know that this is a worthwile roadtrip. It was over too soon.

If you are a fan of jukeboxes or music recorded on 45's, be aware of this book. I own a jukebox and have about 1,000 45's and didn't particularly like it. If our hero had been my age (60), liked all 50's music, then I might have identified with him and his story. Instead he was a 30's something with a yuppy mentality searching for a holy grail that doesn't exist except in his own mind. I empathized with his sadness about the loss of a bygone era, but that was about it. He threw in a part about searching for the real Elvis and here is where I thought he really missed his mark. It would be like me writing about Rudolph Valentino with no first hand knowledge of the man. Nothing was learned here. I also got tired of his political commentary along the way.

Is this guy considered "Alpha" or just plain rude?

I thought the book description of billionaire Gaelan's coldness towards his six year old daughter and his inability to feel love for her must have been exaggerated. But then I read the book, and it is quite accurate. Not only that, but he keeps her virtually imprisoned in their house, home schooled and not allowed to have friends visit. The description did not mention his rudeness and arrogance, which he possesses in abundance.

He hires Chloe sight unseen to be his daughter's in-home tutor. Upon meeting her, he immediately fires her and declares, "I don't have to explain myself to you. I've met you, and I don't want you here. End of story." So what was Chloe's transgression? She's too young and too pretty; he had thought he was hiring a grandmotherly type. Shortly after, he hires her back, then practically attacks her with a kiss, and then SHE threatens to quit. She doesn't, of course, and the reason provided is that she feels such a strong bond with the child she had met mere hours before.

They spat and spar as they gradually learn to trust each other, and Chloe learns the reason for Gaelan's attitude towards his daughter. It is quite dramatic, as expected, but it's an absurd excuse for mistreatment of a young child. We know how the book will end, because we've seen it all: walls will come down, misunderstandings will be understood, obstacles will be obliterated, etc.

About 1/3 of the way through the book, Gaelan begins his transition to Completely Different Person and decides that he's in love with Chloe and that it might be a good idea to stop forcing his daughter to address him by his first name.

Soon after, Sophia and Chloe are in a car crash. Chloe is fine, but little Sophia is hospitalized with a concussion. When Gaelan learns of the crash, he seems more concerned over Chloe's welfare than his daughter's. I guess this is supposed to be romantic. Rather grossly, Gaelan's and Chloe's first romantic encounter occurs in the honeymoon suite of a hotel (yup, the only one available) while Sophia lies in the hospital. They express their deep concern over Sophia through sex and also consider partaking in the room's available champagne and hot tub. Never addressed is the fact they left Sophia in the hospital overnight alone! Also not addressed is the fact that Chloe was responsible for the accident by accepting a ride in a stranger's car and not properly restraining Sophia. I'm not even a parent, and that bothered me!

The book features a few Big Misunderstandings, quick forgiveness, a couple of Big Twists (that actually surprised me), and two minor villains. The author attempted to wrap everything up with a bow in a manner that would test even the most tolerant reader's credulity.

My review probably sounds like it should be no more than 2 stars. I'm trying to be fair with the 3, because the author's writing itself is not bad, and some people might actually enjoy this book. I happened to dislike the lead characters, and that feeling was intensified because I felt that the author glossed over or ignored some pretty horrible behavior and expected us to like the characters as soon as she waved her magic wand.

I just wish there were more books about men who are kind, self-confident, compassionate, and yes, SEXY, with amazing techniques in bed. Is a man like this really less appealing to readers than a man like Gaelan? Obviously, there's a big appeal for the Gaelan types, based on the amount of books I see.

I love to read stories like this so i decided to take a chance. I was severly disappointed. I felt the plot was really jumpy and that the story did not have a nice flow. I had to go back a re-read parts because i was confused as to things that had happened. I do not recommend this book to anyone. It was awful.

Cliched but the author shows promise

The Billionaire's Secrets has a wonderful premise with great mood and setting. I was pleasantly surprised to see it was set in Newfoundland, a rare place to set a romantic suspense. I also felt that the writing was clean and the very few mistakes I found weren't bothersome, with the exception that I always thought that the rum, Screech, was a brand name, yet it was never capitalized. But what really bothered me was although the novel had been revised in 2012, the same issues remained in the new copy. The hero gets mad at heroine, then kisses her, then she gets mad and forgives him. Then the cycle starts again in a different scene. The hero appeared to have a bipolar disorder.
The plot was cliched and unbelievable. In the opening scene, the heroine is nearly run over by the hero who then drives off after telling her that if she can walk to his home, with all her luggage, she has the job. The hero is difficult to like and the heroine, though strong, is too forgiving, mostly because the hero is handsome and the child she is to educate is too cute. I also felt that the scene in the hotel was staged as if the author was trying to install the requisite love scene. It was hard to believe that in the city there was only one hotel room available and it was the honeymoon suite, and that the hospital would not allow a parent to stay with an injured child. The characters did not endear themselves by wanting to make love and open a bottle of champagne to celebrate that the child was not injured too badly.
When the lovemaking is finally consummated several scenes later, a spare bedroom magically appears beside his home office and the pair can make love there. The plot twists at the end of the book were more than predictable and the unlikeable hero switched too suddenly. The author has talent, but should employ a brutal editor to point out plot problems in her future stories. She tried too hard to recreate a Jane Eyre styled book at the expense of believability. Jane Eyre is a book that reflected the times in which it was set. It does not translate well in today's world.
But there is enough quality writing in this book to warrant saying that if the author publishes another book, I might try her again.

Far less familiar to American audiences are his other series, which this exhibition represents in depth: Catrami (tars), Gobbi (hunchbacks), Muffe (molds), Bianchi (whites), Legni (woods), Ferri (irons), Combustioni plastiche (plastic combustions), Cretti and Cellotex works.
Burri's work both demolished and reconfigured the Western pictorial tradition, while reconceptualizing modernist collage. Using unconventional materials, he moved beyond the painted surfaces and markmaking of American Abstract Expressionism and European Art Informel. Burri's unprecedented approaches to manipulating humble substances--and his abject picture-objects--also profoundly influenced Arte Povera, Neo-Dada and Process art.
Alberto Burri was born in Italy in 1915. He first garnered attention in the US in the early 1950s when his work was included in the group exhibition Younger European Painters at the Guggenheim Museum and was also shown at the Frumkin Gallery, Chicago, and at the Stable Gallery, New York. In 1977 a retrospective was presented at the University of California's Frederick S. Wight Gallery, Los Angeles, and traveled to the Marion Koogler McNay Art Institute, San Antonio, Texas, and the Guggenheim Museum (1978). He died in Nice, France, in 1995.

A Superb Survey Of A Master Abstract Artist

This incredible survey of the varied and highly inventive work of Burri is a must-have for all lovers of 20th Century abstract art. Burri was not your run-of-the-mill bon vivant slashing out abstracts as if it were a game or a hobby. These works are rooted in his painful and indeed traumatic experiences during the "great war". A medical doctor, Burri turned to art during his incarceration in a prisoner-of-war camp in Texas, and soon developed his unique style using humble materials such as burlap, tar, and, later, sheet plastics. These works reveal their inherent beauty only through careful looking and consideration. The essays in this volume are highly informative and help one to understand better the choices Burri made in developing his original and provocative art making. A very beautiful volume. Wish I could see the exhibition, but since I cannot travel to New York to see it, this book is the next best thing.

The Trauma of Painting is a Joy

This is one of the best books on any artist I have seen and read. Emily Braun's writing is a pleasure to read. It is precise, insightful, and clear of art world puffery and jargon. The reproductions of Alberto Burri's works are exceptional, and the graphic design of the book is superb.

Prior to receiving this book I was aware of Burri's work, but I had seen little of it and I knew next to nothing of his life. Ms. Braun does a wonderful job of situating the man and his art in the history and events that formed him. This is a book well worth reading and having. It will broaden and deepen your appreciation and understanding of Alberto Burri and the transformative power of art.

Another great book for Guardians of Ga'Hoole

I really liked the book. Although it was about Eglantine, and less about everyone else in the Great Ga'Hoole Tree, it was a nice change. Soren is the main character and most readers forget many other owls in the tree have lives. Eglantine is quite mean to Primrose and realizes that something is terribly wrong with herself as she has a weird dream telling her to go to the Beaks and find her mum. Poor Primrose is replaced with a corny owl named Ginger. This book is different and well worth reading and we get some new perspectives. Oh, and they have the pictures of Soren, Gylfie, Twilight, Digger, Ruby, Ginger, Primrose and Barran in the back and front of the book! I love the pictures!!!

This book was about 20-30 pages shorter than the rest of them, and in my opinion, it really shows. It needed about three more chapters: One to better explain Nyra's motives in brainwashing Eglantine, one to give a better conclusion to the battle scene, and one more that focused on Soren. This would have rounded out the story. I didn't like how the book's focus abruptly switched from Eglantine's personal problems, to an earth-shaking battle, and finally to an ending that had nearly nothing to do with the rest of the book. Also, the plot itself was too flimsy, and felt like it would have done better as a part of Book Six rather than a standalone entry. I know I'm sounding pretty critical here, but I still liked it, and am going to continue reading this series. I hope that I will be able to give books six and seven five stars!

Look, i don't care what other people sya i realy love this book im on the 5th book rite now and i love the sireis. i thought the 1st book was amazing. I LOVE THESE BOOOOOOKS!!!!!!!!!!! Man one person said " it doesent matter if your a kid or adult everyone will like this book" well i agree with that person and i think people should read this book but these books are amazing and so far im enjoying the 5th. I think that learn ing more about Eglantine is is good because she was introduced in the 2nd book and we dont know what happend to Eglantine or whatever! its a nice change i think the auther did a great job with all these books. So i wanna say a few more things about the book,

1.Great for all ages

2.funny and exciting

3.no matter if its on Eglantine or SOREN, DIGGER, GYLFIE, or TWIGHLITE its a nice book.

4. last thing i wanna say is age, DONT MATTER read it any way great for learning about owls, there habbits, or whatever, great book!
