Chasing Love
By T. Tracy
A second chance story for a divorced mom of 3. Heartbreaking to read how she put her heart out there to a man who didn't really seem to love her and yet she was totally in love with him and had his babies. After they divorce she sinks low barely getting by. I like that she tries internet dating. I think the whole idea of internet dating is so scary you don't really know if people are lying. Definitely a different kind of romance

A Romance to Enjoy
By Michael Thal
Matilda Fontanilla, better know as Tilda, is a mother of three beautiful children. Now 47, she discovers her husband, Christopher, has been unfaithful. Over the years he has shown little respect for her and has treated the children like strangers. So Tilda does what any smart woman would do in a failed relationship—divorce.

Thus begins a new chapter in Tilda’s life as she learns the ropes of Internet dating and being courted by a dream guy, David, fifteen years her junior.

Ju Ephraime’s novel, Chasing Love, has at its core an older woman unlucky in love finding affection with a younger man through social media. Ephraime develops key plot points around Mother’s Day—the same day she met her husband and coincidentally—the day the couple split. Naturally, Tilda meets David on Mother’s Day.

Ephraime’s novel deals with many problems couples cope with today in raising children while trying to keep their private lives separate. As a single dad who raised two daughters, I related closely to Tilda’s life circumstances. David’s single life reminded me of my bachelor days and the loneliness I experienced finding love.

The novel contains an emotional pot Ephraime stirs expertly with her vivid writing style as the plot unfolds, providing lessons and inspiration for readers from 16-96.

Beautifully written...such a sweet story
By IBA
Chasing Love is a sweet read that will leave you with a wonderful feeling about love. Tilda and David meet over the internet and it's an instant attraction. The only issue that Tilda has is that she's a few years older than David, she has children, and was previously married. She doesn't know how he will react when they finally meet in person. Their meeting goes well and it seems their attraction goes above and beyond than what they'd experienced online. It seemed Tilda brought lot of drama to the table as she was always worrying about if she was good enough for David and how was it possible that she could satisfy this young man. The romance seemed genuine and the heat level was enough to make me blush in a few parts, which is a good thing. I can honestly say that then ending was beautifully written and Tilda got what she deserved. Well, done, Ju Ephraime, for creating another masterpiece involving romance, drama, and of course some intense heat in a novel that will bring a smile to every readers face.

And she always sort of assumed they'd stay together - until the day the beautiful, brilliant Rei Ayanami showed up in class! When Shinji starts to get curious about Rei, Asuka needs to figure out if she wants to be just friends with Shinji, or something more. (4.5 STARS) Romantic Comedy Meets Sci-fi in "The Shinji Ikari Raising Project"
By T.NAKAJIMA
This is a review of the comic Volume 1 of "The Shinji Ikari Raising Project" published by Dark Horse Comics. Not to be confused with Sadamoto Yushiyuki's "Neon Genesis Evangelion" published by VIZ Media, or Fumino Hayashi's "Neon Genesis Evangelion: Angelic Days" published by ADV Manga.

Here are liner notes on the back cover of Volume 1 of "The Shinji Ikari Raising Project," which goes like this: "Based on the alternate world glimpsed in the final episode of the famous `Neon Genesis Evangelion' TV series, `The Shinji Ikari Raising Project' explores Evangelion's famous characters through love, comedy, and a new set of mysteries!"

Well, in short, this is a ROMANTIC COMEDY based on the main characters of the Evangelion franchise, Rei, Asuka, and Shinji. Believe me or not, this comic delivers the goods.

[STORY] Shinji Ikari is an ordinary junior high school student living with his father Gendo and mother Yui, both working for "Artificial Evolution Lab." Shinji's ordinary life changes dramatically, however, when a beautiful, mysterious girl Rei Ayanami moved to his school in New Tokyo-3 and starts to live with his family. Naturally, Shinji's friend since childhood, strong-willed girl Asuka Langley Shoryu is not very happy about that.

Unlike the original anime, Shinji is not a boy troubled by his relation with his distant father. Like any traditional romantic comedy set in school, he is a boy attracted to two totally different types of girls. This is a time-tested formula for setting up comedy and romance, if not very original. And it works pretty well with these two well-drawn characters, Asuka and Rei. The comic doesn't forget that it is originally a sci-fi drama. It contains a scene of Ayanami wearing plug suit and one failed experiment.

Those who have not seen the original TV series can enjoy the comic as stand-alone series, though they might miss most of the sly in-jokes (Shinji's bearded father Gendo doesn't speak much because ... he is now a husband dominated by his loving and ever-smiling wife Yui). Jokes are not overused and the story keeps a nice, swift pace, following the romantic triangle of Shinji, Asuka, and Rei, and its consequences that are often funny.

[ART] Though this is the first major work (his first tankobon book), Osamu Takahashi did a very good job with nice art (especially that of Rei Ayanami), which looks faithful to original character designs by Yoshiyuki Sadamoto. The comic's art sometimes become slightly "fan servicey," but it is not too explicit or excessive. The book also has very funny bonus pages.

The English version comic has the same front/back cover art and four color pages. It also comes with the 7-page afterword from the editor of the English version.

Original "The Shinji Ikari Raising Project" has been serialized in "Monthly Shônen Ace" published by Kadokawa Shoten since June, 2005. The comic, illustrated by Osamu Takahashi, is inspired by one of the storylines in the game of the same name released in 2004. The first volume of the series was published in May, 2006 and eight tankobon books have already been released in Japan so far. I hope that Dark Horse will keep on publishing the series.

"The Shinji Ikari Raising Project" is one of the several spin-off comics that was created after the phenomenal success of the Evangelion series, and is one of the better projects. Enjoy it.

Rehashing the Rehash
By James S. Taylor
How do take an amazing, ground-breaking series, like Evangelion, with its dark psychology, twisted mysteries, tense action, and make it boring? You take all of those things and toss them out the window. What's left? An alternate reality glimpsed for a few minutes in one of the last TV episodes ballooned into a manga series. Okay, but why is that boring? We still have Rei, Asuka, and Shinji. The artwork is very good. We're getting new stories.

Wait a minute, no we're not, and that is the problem. What we have here is simply the Evangelion characters recast in a typical high school comedy romance.

And by typical I mean that moldy old formula used too many times in too many other series. If you've been around the anime community a while you've seen it all before: the one guy torn between different girls, the beach episode, the eat my cooking episode, the oh no you saw my panties episode, the town fair episode, the visit the school nurse's office episode, the let's spy on their shopping trip episode, the school trip episode, and on and on. For a great deal of this you could cut out the Evangelion characters and replace them with those of any equivalent genre manga and there would be next to no difference.

If this sounds like a good idea to you, or you are too new to the anime community to have been around this particular hamster wheel one too many times, then knock yourself out on this series. You'll probably enjoy it quite a bit, because it will be new to you. If you haven't been exposed to this template too many times, this manga will be funny and charming. However, if the idea of Evangelion reduced to this sort of cookie-cutter, formulaic, rehash brings back too many memories of series that felt like a few good starting episodes, a few good ending episodes, and miles of filler in between, then stay away.

Frankly, the first two volumes of this manga seem like a collection of everything that Evangelion was deliberately trying not to be, and, because Evangelion wasn't this, it had a major impact on the anime world and became a classic. Sadly, that will not be the case for this manga, which is more of an old dog desperately in need of some new tricks.

I am a die hard Evangelion fan and I always pick up anything associated to it, and this was no exception. I will admit it's definitely different as it is set in an alternate timeline where everyone is for the most part ordinary people, but I can handle that considering the original was so dark. The art is great, almost on par with the original artist. It's really weird seeing Rei laugh and smile though lol Basically This starts with Shinji and Asuka being childhood friends and the exploits of school and such, Rei comes along and Asuka gets jealous. Definitely a fanservice, but again, I can handle it seeing as though the original was so different. I would pick this up if you want to see a lighter side to Evangelion and its characters, but I probably wouldn't suggest this to those who didn't like Evangelion in the first place (shame on you!!) .

Starting Point, 1979-1996, by Hayao Miyazaki

The first of a pair of memoirs in collection form, featuring essays, interviews, and even a brief comic on the history of airline food, from the master animator.

In the first two decades of his career, filmmaker Hayao Miyazaki laid the groundwork for his legendary movies. Starting Point is a collection of essays, interviews, and memoirs that go back to the roots of Miyazaki's childhood, the formulation of his theories of animation, and the founding of Studio Ghibli.

Before directing such acclaimed films as Spirited Away, Miyazaki was just another salaried animator, but with a vision of his own. Follow him as he takes his first steps on the road to success, experience his frustrations with the manga and animation industries that often suffocate creativity, and realize the importance of bringing the childhood dreams of the world to life. Starting Point: 1979-1996 is not just a chronicle of the life of a man whose own dreams have come true, it is a tribute to the power of the moving image.

A great, complex read
By Amazon Customer
Starting Point: 1979-1996 is an amazing book. It's a heavy read, with essays covering everything from Miyazaki's works, to philosophy and religion, Japanese economy and the life of an animator and so much more. I found it a contradictory, frustrating and often pessimistic read but also to be incredibly fascinating and honest. It adds a whole new dimension to the man we know in Miyazaki. He's a genius as an animator but it seems he must be a terribly unfulfilled person in real life (he missed much of his children's lives due to his workaholic attitude). The book could do with some more pictures and maybe more information on his Nausicaa manga but otherwise it's a brilliant, if not always a happy read. I hope Viz Media release the sequel - Turning Point: 1997-2008, sometime in the near future. Highly recommended for Miyazaki fans. 5/5

A Must-Read For All Miyazaki Fans
By Johanna
I bought Starting Point at the beginning of this year as material for a research paper I was writing on three of Hayao Miyazaki's films. Since then, I have read the entire thing and reread multiple portions of this extraordinary book. It became an invaluable resource for me as I wrote my paper, but it was also a very enjoyable and personal book. Over the course of the weeks it took me to finish it, I felt like I actually got to know Hayao Miyazaki. As I told several people, Starting Point is definitely the best book I have purchased in a very long time, and so far it is the best thing I have read this year. With all the wonderful essays, interviews, directorial memos, and even drawings it contains, I'm surprised there hasn't been more hype about it. It is an absolute must-read for any Miyazaki fan. I can't believe we had to wait more than fifteen years for this book to be translated and published in the United States (it was first published in Japan in 1996).

The book, which is nearly 500 pages long, has been divided into several parts and includes a foreword by John Lasseter (director of Toy Story) and an afterword by Isao Takahata (director of Grave of the Fireflies). The first part, entitled "On Creating Animation" is perhaps the most technical part of the book. Even though many of Miyazaki's thoughts on animation and film techniques were a bit over my head, I still enjoyed reading those chapters and thinking about them. Miyazaki's writing style is simple enough that I didn't feel swept away by too much jargon or overly-technical terms. For filmmakers and those interested in how animation works, this part of the book will be fascinating. The second part, called "On The Periphery of the Work" was similar to the previous section in that it contained chapters about animation techniques. However, Miyazaki mainly writes about his thoughts on various animated films. He also includes some very short essays like "The Tokyo I Love" that almost feel like journal entries. Part three, "People", is full of essays about individuals who have helped, inspired, and even irritated Miyazaki. Two of my favorites are "I Left Raising Our Children To My Wife" and "My Old Man's Back." These are both very vulnerable essays about some of the people closest to Miyazaki, and reading them almost brought tears to my eyes.

"A Story in Color" and part of "My Favorite Things" give the reader a short break from the text with a comic and some illustrations. "Dining in Midair" is a charming and sometimes amusing comic about the history of in-flight dining. Scrapbooks No. 1 - 3 in the beginning of "My Favorite Things" display some pictures of flying machines, tanks, and cars, and also a very short illustrated story called "I Want A Garden Like This." Then we are back to more essays for the remaining part of "Favorite Things." My favorite essay in this section is "My Random Thoughts Notebook Is My Hobby." This one made me laugh because I expected it to be an essay about Miyazaki's random thoughts notebook. However, it was simply a piece full of disjointed thoughts, memories, and observations.

"Planning Notes; Directorial Memoranda" was a nice inclusion and the directorial memos were fun to read. For those who want more details about some of their favorite Miyazaki films like Castle in the Sky, My Neighbor Totoro, Kiki's Delivery Service, Porco Rosso, and Princess Mononoke, this section is for them. Although the memos are fairly short, I found them fascinating and enjoyable. However, for those who really want depth and insight into their favorite films, "Works" is the part to flip to. This section has a lot of information on Miyazaki's earlier works, like Lupin III, Future Boy Conan, and Panda! Go Panda! I had not heard of any of these before reading the book, but reading the chapter on Lupin was what convinced me to watch the film Lupin III: Castle of Cagliostro, which was excellent. "Works" also has quite a few extensive chapters on Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind, My Neighbor Totoro, and Castle in the Sky. Miyazaki focuses on Nausicaä especially in several chapters, one of my favorites being an interview titled "Nature Is Both Generous and Ferocious."

All in all, this book was excellent and I am very pleased to have it in my library. I have heard rumors that Viz Media might be publishing Miyazaki's later book Turning Point: 1997 - 2008 soon, and I hope that is the case. Much as I enjoyed this book, I would love to read more about Miyazaki's later works like Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away, and Ponyo. In the meantime, I plan to read this book over and over again, and I encourage anyone interested in Miyazaki's works (or even just interested in film and animation) to pick up a copy.

The vision of a genius
By klo_dude
Hayao Miyazaki is considered one of the best directors of animation history.
That easily is the best reason of why to buy this book. Covering the sursprisingly amount of 500 pages, Starting Point (in a beatiful edition by Viz Media) icludes not only all the essays and commentaries written by Miyazaki between 1979 and 1996, but also integrates a lot of skecthes, cartoons and rare drawings of the famous director. Not only that, but the biggest catch of the book is discovering that Miyazaki, as what it is (a genius), it's also a complex individual and a likeable writer. His opinions included in this book, cover a wide variety of topics: the history of Japan, animation principles, evolution of the anime industry, his personal life, opinions of society, ecology, war and even life.

Starting Point is a provoking and complex read. The opinions of Miyazaki may come as overly extreme or controversial, but in his broad vision of the world is clear that he makes his animated movies with passion and care for the children (which are his intended audience). Viz Media deserves a price for this hardcover edition, the design and quality is top-notch and includes a brief, but insightful introduction by John Lasseter and an Afterword, by the also amazing director, Isao Takahata -from Grave of the Fireflies fame-.

A recommended read by fans of anime, animation or Studio Ghibli and a must-buy by animation students.

Mankind Beyond Earth: The History, Science, and Future of Human Space Exploration, by Claude A. Piantadosi

Seeking to reenergize Americans' passion for the space program, the value of further exploration of the Moon, and the importance of human beings on the final frontier, Claude A. Piantadosi presents a rich history of American space exploration and its major achievements. He emphasizes the importance of reclaiming national command of our manned program and continuing our unmanned space missions, and he stresses the many adventures that still await us in the unfolding universe. Acknowledging space exploration's practical and financial obstacles, Piantadosi challenges us to revitalize American leadership in space exploration in order to reap its scientific bounty.

Piantadosi explains why space exploration, a captivating story of ambition, invention, and discovery, is also increasingly difficult and why space experts always seem to disagree. He argues that the future of the space program requires merging the practicalities of exploration with the constraints of human biology. Space science deals with the unknown, and the margin (and budget) for error is small. Lethal near-vacuum conditions, deadly cosmic radiation, microgravity, vast distances, and highly scattered resources remain immense physical problems. To forge ahead, America needs to develop affordable space transportation and flexible exploration strategies based in sound science. Piantadosi closes with suggestions for accomplishing these goals, combining his healthy skepticism as a scientist with an unshakable belief in space's untapped―and wholly worthwhile―potential.

Review

An important book by a visionary with his feet planted on the ground.

(Kirkus Reviews)

Finally, a give-it-to-me-straight account of why space exploration matters. In Mankind Beyond Earth, Claude A. Piantadosi folds together science, politics, and culture to demonstrate why a civilization without a spacefaring future is doomed to extinction.

(Neil Degrasse Tyson, astrophysicist, American Museum of Natural History, author of Space Chronicles: Facing the Ultimate Frontier)

In this engaging book, Claude A. Piantadosi presents a concise and accurate history of how our nation's space program arrived at its current uncertain juncture, supplementing it with powerful insights into a wide range of fields, from planetary science to human physiology. This is a compelling work from a scientist committed to expanding the human exploration of our universe.

(Michael L. Gernhardt, NASA astronaut, manager of the Environmental Physiology Laboratory at the Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center)

Recommended for readers intrigued by the real-life requirements of space exploration.

(Library Journal)

This nicely written volume will appeal to the general public and space enthusiasts who want to learn about the hazards of human space exploration.

(Choice)

Piantadosi's goal throughout the book is to explain to the lay audience why spaceexploration is difficult and important. He achieves this first goal in a clear manner, very accessible to someone without a technical background.

(Lisa Messeri MetaScience)

Piantadosi assembles and presents the best of the vast amount of information we have accumulated… it will kindle in many a sense of excitement for some of the great adventures still awaiting us as a nation.

Review

A whole generation has grown up with tales of the glory of man's excursion into space, and this fact-filled and stimulating book ties the story together and extends it to further exploration of the Moon again and Mars.

(Bruce D. Butler, University of Texas Medical School at Houston)

Mankind Beyond Earth offers a wide-ranging analysis of the challenges facing human space exploration. Using examples from polar expeditions, aviation history, undersea voyages, and space missions, Claude A. Piantadosi shows that exploration is unforgiving to those who fail to plan. Piantadosi details the barriers that must be surmounted for humans to leave Earth for long voyages. He supports his case with information from diverse disciplines, including microbiology, radiation physics, botany, astronomy, and physiology. He also makes a strong argument for the United States to refocus on exploring the Moon and to use Moon exploration both for scientific discovery and as preparation for longer trips to Mars.

(Jay C. Buckey MD, former payload-specialist astronaut, professor of medicine at the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth)

A brilliant and fascinating science lesson, loosely organized around space exploration
By Aaron C. Brown
I loved this book, but you may not. The author is a scientist of broad interest who tells you much more than you need to know to weigh alternative ideas for exploring outer space. For example, there are four ways to die from lack of oxygen and the book gives concise but thorough descriptions of the physiology of each one. Someday an astronaut may have a heart attack (ischemia) in space, or die from cytotoxic or stagnant hypoxia due to disease or genetic defect. But you'd think a book on space travel would concentrate on not having oxygen because space is a vacuum and other planets don't have oxygen atmospheres and maybe your spaceship or spacesuit sprang a leak or your oxygen recycling system broke down (hypoxic hypoxia, if you’re keeping track). The book has a similarly comprehensive account of how radiation affects tissues instead of describing only the most significant short-term dangers of cosmic rays outside the Van Allen belt.

It’s not just physiology that gets this treatment, the author will launch into general discussions of physics, chemistry, geology, scientific history or anything else that interests him with the least excuse. Ever wondered about how we got those International Geophysical and International Polar years? Or what the “Antarctic stare” is? Then this is the book for you. But if you’re looking for a focused discussion of the technology of space travel, you might get frustrated. Think of a late-night rambling discussion with a very smart guy who has thought a lot about exploration of outer space, who has a strong pedantic streak that is tolerable because he actually knows what he’s talking about and it’s interesting stuff.

Another feature of this book that will not be universally popular but that I liked, is the author has strong opinions and little patience for alternative views. Exploration means sending humans, and the only path worth considering is developing self-sustaining resources and capabilities like permanent low-Earth orbit facilities, a moon base, methodologies for extended living without resupply and mining, processing, reprocessing and disposal technologies to manage physical resources off-Earth. Space should be explored because that’s what humans do, and maybe a little for what we will learn, but it will not be valuable as a permanent place to live. You will learn why the author holds these opinions, but not much about why others may disagree (attractive ideas the author doesn’t wish to discuss are labeled “mind candy” and left at that).

The writing style is clear and vigorous, with a distinctive voice. My only gripe is the author is overfond of silly acronyms and tables that could use better design and any point at all. This is a book that will teach you a lot about a lot of things, and will be a pleasure to read for those who like to learn without worrying about whether there is any use to the learning.

An excellent mix of topics
By LewisC
I am a huge reader of science texts. I've read all the popular books and I like to delve into the less well known. I've honestly never heard of Professor Piantadosi nor have I read his work before.

The author looks at the history of space exploration and the barriers facing us in the future. As he says, space travel is not just about technology, it also about biology. He makes the point more than once that it is also about finances and politics. He starts off showing the passion of the people who made it to the moon and explains the difficulties they faced.

As we go through the book, he explains the importance of sustenance, waste removal, air for breathing, propulsion, distances, the effects of radiation on physiology and technology and so much more. Who will be the people exploring, what will they explore and how will they do it.

Some people may not like his style of writing. Like many scientific texts, it's written in a mostly informal essay style. While everything he says is related, he tends to jump around a bit. In the space of just a few pages, he explains the measurements we'll use in space (not just KM and light-year but AU and parsec), biomedicine, stress and the effects of radiation. Stuck in there is a great discussion of the people who live above 12,000 feet and how they have adapted to that life.

I say same people may not like it, but I found the entire thing to be fascinating. I've never seen some of the concepts explained as well as the author does it. There are a lot of topics I have never seen addressed for the layman.

This book is sort of like National Geographic for the Space Explorer. Maybe even a little popular mechanics thrown in for good measure. I really enjoyed it and recommend it to anyone who likes general space science. Give it a few chapters to decide whether nor not to finish. If you can make it to chapter 3, you'll have a good feel for his writing. I found it to be a bit quirky but, in the end, a great way to approach so many topics. Space travel really is complicated, more so than many people believe.

Contemporary Translation Theories (Translation Studies), by Edwin Gentzler

In this introduction to the history of translation theory, Edwin Gentzler explores the strengths and weaknesses of the most important approaches that have developed in translation studies over the last 30 years. Tracing the connections and overlaps between the different schools of thought, the author challenges many of their assumptions and illustrates the importance of translation theory to the current debates on the nature of language. By demonstrating how translation theories relate to the fields of linguistics, literary and cultural theory, Gentzler offers new insights into the nature of translation and into the nature of language and cross-cultural communication. "Contemporary Translation Theories" should be a prime resource for students of translation, linguistics, the philosophy of language and literary theory, serving them both as a beginner's guide and subsequently as a valuble reference source.

The True History of God's Words

There is not one history of the Bible, but two. One is a history of God preserving His words through His people. The other is of the devil using the Roman Catholic church to pervert God's words through her "scholars."

Written in a down-to-earth style, and packed with cartoon illustrations by Jack Chick, Daniels shows that the Bibles Rome gave us are really clever counterfeits, designed to eliminate God's preserved words in English, the KJV. You will see why the KJV is the only Bible you can trust.

Review
It took 300 years of clever maneuvering to bring us where we are today. David Daniels masterfully uncovers facts blurred by Roman Catholic historians. This marvelous book will be a wild ride and an eye opener. History, that so many find difficult to understand, is made simple with down-to-earth explanations backed by many illustrations. The Roman Catholic system did NOT give us the Bible, as they so blatantly claim. --Jack Chick

About the Author
David Daniels, B.A., M.Div., is trained in Bible and linguistics. After twenty years of searching the Hebrew and Greek scriptures and studying the history of the Bible, he has concluded that the King James Bible is God's preserved words in English.

Did the Catholic Church Give Us the Bible?
By Blaine Bosserman
Great book! It shows the you the truth of how we got our present Bible and what role the Catholic Church play in that, if any at all! This book also shows the innacuracies of versions other than the KJV.

This is an excellent book, easy to read and very informative. God's work has been perserved in the King James Bible, believe it.

Interesting theories, unconvincing
By William C. Sain
The theories Daniels presents are interesting, but ultimately unconvincing. This is largely because the book lacks primary sources (or any sources) for its boldest claims. Many of the secondary sources come from other Chick Publications books. That alone does not disprove any of his claims, but it does make it difficult to convince an objective Protestant, a Catholic, or anyone Daniels/Chick would consider a non-believer. This book is best going to strengthen the faith of those who already agree with its premise, namely, that the Catholic church is evil, the Whore of Babylon, and is working hard to destroy God's "true word," the King James Bible.

Various problems:

*Daniels praises Erasmus for preserving and translating the "textus receptus" which he claims is the true word of God. But Erasmus didn't have the whole New Testament, and had to back translate using Jerome's Vulgate (which Daniels said is a perverted Bible)

*Daniels repeatedly says Catholics venerate Origen as a saint and church father. This is not true. He was condemned for heretical beliefs including, but not limited to, the pre-existence of souls, something he took from Plato but not from the Bible. For this reason, among others, Origen is respected but is not raised to the status of saint or father.

*Neither is Alphonsus Liguori a church father. He is seen as a "Doctor of the Church," which is something entirely different. Doctors are men and women who are great theologians throughout history. Fathers are men who lived in the first few centuries that helped form the church's teachings. Some fathers are doctors; some are not. Some doctors are fathers; some are not.

*From what I could tell, the Vaduois did not exist until the 12th or 13th century. Some Protestant theologians tried to tie them to earlier groups, but this is definitely a minority position not accepted by objective historians without an agenda.

Benefits of the book:

*Rightly points out the danger of the "big Bible" industry, whose goal is to make money.

*Rightly cautions us to show a profound reverence for the word of God, which means not just accepting any Bible version that comes along.

*Rightly points out the problems of the history of the Catholic Church, which lessens its credibility. But some Catholics may point to Matthew 23:2-3 (KJV), "[Jesus] Saying, The scribes and the Pharisees sit in Moses' seat: All therefore whatsoever they bid you observe, that observe and do; but do not ye after their works: for they say, and do not." Likewise, if the Catholic church's bishops have the authority of the apostles, it could apply to them as well and be interpreted as, "The bishops and Popes sit in the apostles' seat: All therefore whatsoever they bid you observe, that observe and do; but do not ye after their works: for they say, and do not."

Interesting, practical intro to ed'l psych'y for teachers
By Sharon Taylor (staylor@netside.net)
In a highly readable manner, Jeanne Ormrod introduces educational psychology for K-12 teachers. She incorporates many of the learning principles and teaching practices her text espouses by using colorfully illustrated and highlighted multiple formats throughout, such as summaries, case studies, classroom applications and examples, emphasis of major points, and learning exercises. The three major sections address learner diversity, how students learn, and becoming an effective teacher. She outlines seven themes for effective learning which she addresses in every section: interaction, information processing, relevance, classroom climate, challenge, expectations, and diversity. The text cites educational research throughout (there is an index with 44 pages of references) yet the paragraphs have a readibility and easy flow to them. Ormrod's chapters consistently address her goals as an author: focusing on cores principles, relating them to our own behavior, processing them effectively and applying them in the classroom. The phrase "interesting textbook," usually an oxymoron, in this case is well-deserved praise.

Inside the learning mind....
By Bonney Lane
I found this book to be very informitive in how the mind works and respect to how people learn. I have improved my personal study habits because after reading this book I realized that I was not using the most effective way of keeping things in my long term memory. This book gives a detailed explanation with real life examples of how to approach situations as a teacher or parent who wants to know the inner tickings of the developing learner. If you are more concerned with toddlers though this book only briefly touches on them. This book deals more with school age children. If I were to try and write a review that this book deserves, I would be writing all night. I know that the description of this book is written above and I believe it to be a really good description of the book. I will agree though that this book answers all of the aspects of teaching, learning and the classroom as well as the many theories and approaches to educational psychology.

Best Educational book I've read so far!
By Stacey Abrams
This book is for my 3rd Education class, and so far it is the best! The author really talks to you (starting around chapter 5/6) like she is sitting at the table with you. She even refers to her own experiences as both a parent and a teacher. The same children resurface throughout the book. Also, she gives concrete examples to help explain her abstract teachings, and she gives specific suggestions in how to use the research and make it work in your classroom. Great book!
