Book was in new condition as described. However it did not have shrink wrap to protect the corners. Package also arrived promptly. I don't think they say whether or not the books comes with cds.

"I wear the chain I forged in life," Jacob Marley says in Dickens's A Christmas Carol. In this moving, cleverly imagined life of Scrooge's late partner, Osman reveals precisely how that chain was forged. Jacob Marley, born Jacob Turner, lives in bourgeois comfort with his handicapped twin brother, Ezra, until the age of nine, when their father, a small farmer threatened with debtor's prison, shoots himself. Soon afterwards, their mother dies, and the boys end up slaving in a coal mine called Elizabeth's Furnace. At 13, Jacob is framed for the murder of the odious mine foreman. Thrown into prison, he is finally rescued seven years later, in 1796, by cardsharp Bill Worthy. A paradoxical figure, Worthy is a scoundrel with a heart of gold, who takes Jacob under his wing and gives him his new name. The two become partners and gradually turn their illicit dealings into a legitimate, successful business. Since guilt-ridden Marley believes Ezra died without his protection, his capacity for affection withers. Only one person elicits some kindness from himAhis clerk, the young Ebenezer Scrooge. Unfortunately, Scrooge's own emotional life is desiccated both by his association with Marley and the death during childbirth of his beloved sister, Fan. It is after Marley dies that the story as Dickens's readers know it begins to reveal itself. Marley is approached by Lucifer and given a chance to help one mortal. At the same time, he discovers that his beloved brother is still alive. He makes his difficult choice when he realizes that Scrooge needs his message of salvation more than Ezra does. Osmun's para-Dickensian tale is a solid piece of historical imagining, accurately reflecting the social and economic conditions of England in the 1800s. The noted artist Wendell Minor has designed the jacket for this promising debut. (Sept.) Mark Hazard Osmun grew up in Virginia and Hawaii. A graduate of Virginias George Mason University, he began his career as a journalist, writing for Rolling Stone, The Honolulu Advertiser, The San Francisco Examiner, The Dallas Morning News and USA Today. He lives in California with his wife and two cats. Currently, he is writing a new novel set in the 1800s.

A compelling, superbly crafted, original, memorable novel.

In Marley's Ghost, Mark Osmun has written a brilliant "prequel" to Charles Dickens' classic "A Christmas Carol". Here is the story of Jacob Marley whose ghost appeared to Ebenezer Scrooge to announce the coming of three spirits that legendary Christmas Eve. Jacob was a fugitive, prodigy, gambler, miner, mentor, corruptor and Ebenezer's partner in exploiting the vulnerable, the unwary, and the needy. Jacob was himself both victim and villain, capable of nobility and vile behavior. After his death Jacob wanders a frozen hell seeking answers and redemption. There he becomes a pawn in the battle between Light and Dark, ultimately compelled to choose between God and the Devil as the future of all human kind hangs in the balance. Marley's Ghost is a compelling, superbly crafted, original novel that does full justice to Dickens and is a memorable testament which may well become a classic itself!

Provacative

Mark Osmun's great imagination has taken us behind the scenes of a story we have read or watched on television annually since we were kids. Even with our familiarity with the story we knew virtually nothing about Jacob Marley, without whom The Christmas Carol would never have been written. Five stars for cleverness alone. To his credit, Osmun chose not to imitate the Dicken's style yet he put coal dust in my teeth together with a clostrophobic shortness of breath as I read through Marley's experience. Marley's journey is a wonderful metaphor for the journey we all travel as we ask questions about good and evil and our relationships with God and our fellow man. Marley's quest to save Scrooge is a journey of love from a man who has known everything but love. "When the time comes - How will you choose?"

THE WRITER IS A VERBAL ARTIST. ALL MY SENSES WERE TUNED TO EACH SCENE FROM THE DAMP COAL MINES AND THE LONDON STREETS TO CANDLELIT DISCUSSIONS AMONG SPIRITS. MARLEY'S GHOST IS A DELIGHTFUL TREAT THAT BRINGS, NOT ONLY ENJOYMENT, BUT MANY MOMENTS OF REFLECTION. IT'S A BOOK THAT MAKES YOU THINK! HOPE HIS NEXT BOOK COMES OUT SOON. THIS IS A GREAT READ FOR EVERY SEASON.

Patrick De Pelsmacker holds a PhD in economics (University of Ghent, Belgium). He is Professor of Marketing at the University of Antwerp, Belgium and part-time Professor of Marketing at the University of Ghent. Maggie Geuens holds a PhD in applied economics at the University of Antwerp, Belgium, where she also worked as an assistant professor. Currently she is Professor of Marketing at the University of Ghent. She is the academic director of the Brand Management Centre at the Vlerick Leuven Gent Management School. Joeri Van den Bergh holds a masters degree in marketing (University of Ghent and the Vlerick Leuven Gent Management School). Mnemonica is a book appart

I really like this book, without knowing really much about card magic. But the reason why I like it so much is that I am a fan of Juan Tamariz, and reading the book for me is like Juan is really with you explaining with his enthusiasm natural passion for his work all about the Mnemonica deck.

About the Author

UMRAN S. INAN is Professor of Electrical Engineering at Stanford University, where he serves as Director of the Space, Telecommunications, and Radioscience (STAR) Laboratory. He has received the 1998 Stanford University Tau Beta Pi Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching, and actively conducts research in electromagnetic waves in plasmas, lightning discharges, ionospheric physics, and very low frequency remote sensing. Dr. Inan has served as the Ph.D. thesis advisor for 13 students and is a senior member of IEEE, a member of Tau Beta Pi, Sigma Xi, the American Geophysical Union, the Electromagnetics Academy, and serves as Secretary of U.S. National Committee of the International Union of Radio Science (URSI).

AZIZ S. INAN is Associate Professor of Electrical Engineering at the University of Portland, where he has also served as Department Chairman. A winner of the University's faculty teaching award, he conducts research in electromagnetic wave propagation in conducting and inhomogeneous media. He is a member of Tau Beta Pi and IEEE.

Successful integration of earlier two books...

Integration of authors earlier two books on Engineering Electromagnetics (which did not do transmission and reflections vs arbitrary incident angle) and Electromagnetic Waves (which had general transmission and reflection case, but not electro and magneto statics). If you have the earlier two books, you have just about everything and more that is included in this single volume with the exception of some newer examples. Very nice descriptions of distributed vs lumped components and time delay. Nice examples abound, for example, dielectric waveguides using InGaAs and InP semiconductors and use of forces on capacitor in MEMs, and an introduction to metamaterials. A bit wordy, but generally interesting reading. Gives nice phase plots in addition to magnitude when talking about reflection and transmission, which seems a rarity in most books. Antenna theory not covered at all, which is a bit of a disappointment if one is looking for a complete volume for the undergraduate EE. No numerical or variational methods and nothing on coplanar or microstrip lines. Wish some author somewhere would explain how size of hole in Faraday cage affects shielding effectiveness and include enough of a discussion of variational methods so undergrads would realize that the capacitance of a pair of conductors of an odd shape is always smaller than the capacitance of some known configuration that would enclose them, such as parallel wires enclosing rectangular wires (i.e. how to set useful upper and lower bounds for capacitance, resistance, inductance without detailed calculation) but you still need to find such usefuls facts in Jackson or Collin end of chapter problems.

This grammar is a good way to practise your english. The best thing is that there are lots of exercises as the exam ones. If you want to check your answers, you can because there is the key. This grammar helps me every day because at first it gives you the grammar and then you have exercises about that. It is well organised.
