I absolutely love the logic of this book's framework

We had several up-ending events in our family life this past year, and this financial guide from Jonathan Clements has been a godsend as we navigated the financial decisions involved. I absolutely love the logic of this book's framework. When I have a specific, urgent question, I can quickly get to the topic I need because of the way the book is organized by theme and sub-topics. In this regard, it differs from all other financial guidebooks I've read. But most important of all, to me, is that the author kept his familiar personal style (I subscribed to the WSJ for two decades mainly to be able to read Clements' weekly WSJ column). My favorite, favorite part of this book is the bit where, after explaining the logic of the advice given on a topic, Clements then includes a personal section on what he actually, in his real life, has done on the matter. Having followed this author's financial writings since the early 1990s, I can tell you that whenever I have diligently and patiently followed his lead, the results have been rewarding. And whenever I have given in to my emotional worries, and deviated from his clear logic, I've come to regret it. The other aspect of this book that is extremely helpful is the detailed teaching of complicated topics in a way that allows all of us regular people out here to truly understand the fundamentals that we have to grasp if we want to successfully manage our finances.

Easy amazing read for everybody. The sooner the better; this book has it all.

Wow, talk about an easy read. Mr. Clements really broke down the world of finances' into many different areas and keeps his explanations short and to the point. He even lets you know when a part of the book will have some boring math formulas so you can skim it if it's too much for you. Anyway the main reason for the purchase of this book was to find out about social security, its new rule and when the best time to start drawing for my wife and me. This book gave many examples and on top of that gave a website that you can go to and with little information about your age and current income will tell you how much you will draw if you choose to draw at different ages. Yes, other sites do this but none of them factored in the best time for a lower earning spouse to draw on the higher earning spouses account. the site even calculated the difference you will make by drawing at different ages. Another great point for me was his advice on how to "Rebalance" my TSP. I did this and within 5 days earned over $5,000.00. My account balance has been rising daily. This book covers almost everything and the best part is that it is done in very short sections that gets the reader attention quickly and keeps it for the entire section. He even starts out by telling you how to navigate the book. There are many referrals to different companies and websites for further information. I was able to come up with several categories I was interested in and made a list of different websites to go to for more info or to possibly purchase financial products. I would recommend this book to everyone, trust me it covers anything you can think of when it comes to finances. I'm giving one to my 17 year old granddaughter. A Practical Financial Guru has Reappeared

I followed Jonathan Clements for many years through his Wall St. Journal (WSJ) column. In my opinion he had the clear straightforward answers to everyday financial questions that everyone encounters. I lost a compass for my financial life when he left the WSJ and I was so happy to see that he has reappeared with his Money Guide series. Now I have a single reference guide to pull off of my shelf when I have a question about a financial issue. This is far more effective than trying to locate the appropriate yellowing WSJ clipping that I have kept on file over the years.

How much do I treasure Mr. Clements' advice? Well, my son graduated from college last spring and he now has enough money to make his first stock investment. He conferred with me over the past few days about how to go about making the best decision. Once we had talked through what he should do and he had made a decision he placed a trading order. He then asked me whether I could recommend a book that he could consult to get further advice. I pulled my copy of "Money Guide 2016" from my desk, held it up to my video conference camera, and told him that I would order a copy for him as soon as we finished our video conference. I did.

As you might have guessed, my investing advice was heavily influenced by years of following the insights and recommendations of Jonathan Clements. I recommend that you avail yourself of his knowledge as well.

"Maps" will become a part of your vocabulary

With Maps of Meaning, Jordan Peterson has accomplished an astonishing synthesis and exposition of Western thought. I've been digging around in this stuff, from psychology to philosophy to ancient history to science, for 37 years and you can take my word for it.

For me, the only work that has been nearly as fruitful as Dr Peterson's is Leonard Bernstein's Norton lectures on music. But then music doesn't have to contend with "meaning".

efficient delivery, brilliant book

Prof. Peterson's book blends neuroscience, evolutionary biology and mythology to explain how we human construct and navigate our reality, definitely worth reading for those who seek existential wisdom.

We need to make the effort to understand the concepts in this book.

Peterson has integrated science, mytholgy, theology, sociology, psychology, anthropoligy, religion and much more into a comprehensive world view of the mind and spirit. It may seem to be an intimidating read for non-academics (like myself) but he has structured the book to separate the summary sections for each major concept from the detailed discussion. We need many more thinkers like Peterson who can connect and integrate the important ideas from so many areas of narrow and intense study into such a broad and important view. And we need to make the effort to understand and appreciate the genious of the few who are capable of this task.

Professor Kumar was also the coordinator at IISc of the Education and Research Network Project (ERNET), India's first wide-area packet network. He is an IEEE Fellow.

The organization People's Will, which was responsible for the assassination of Czar Alexander II in 1881, is pertinent not only to the genealogy of Russian radicalism but also, as one of its earliest modern exponents, to the practice of a terrorist. In one member of the People's Will, eminent historian Pipes has found a roiling theater of the inner psychology of terrorism. From a comfortable Muscovite family, Sergei Degaev was, like many students of the time, sympathetic to the People's Will. Although they inducted him into the organization, its leaders regarded Degaev as intelligent but dreamy and weak willed. These traits cross-fertilized bizarrely with those of Pipes' second protagonist, the gendarme who suppressed the People's Will: Georgii Sudeikin. Disgusted with czarism, like Degaev, though for careerist rather than idealistic reasons, Sudeikin apparently turned Degaev. Guilt-wracked, he confessed to the People's Will, who turned their traitor back against Sudeikin, whom Degaev eventually murdered. A Straightforward Telling of an Intriguing Story

Considering the limitations that existed about its subject, The Degaev Affair is surprisingly informative. The story of a key Russian revolutionary would be interesting enough. But, Degaev's many role changes, including informant, murderer, and professor, lends a fascinating psychological aspect to the story that leaves the reader wanting to know more about his motivations. To satisfy this curiosity, Pipes would have had to venture into the realm of speculation. Fortunately, he recognized that he didn't have enough primary research material to allow him to justify random speculation. Instead, he chose to rely on the story's intrinsic strength by simply relating its facts. In taking this path, Pipes treats his subject with a respect that wouldn't have existed had he engaged in casual conjecture.
Some may bemoan the book's brevity given the story's interesting qualities. But, those who look past the length will find rewards that belie the book's briefness. One will find a well-written retelling that highlights one person's role in shaping both the Russian revolutionary movement and the government's response to that movement. Additionally, enough material is presented to allow the reader to draw parallels with current events. Thanks to Pipes' uncomplicated presentation, The Degaev Affair stands as a distinctive look at a unique case.

A look into the mind of a terrorist (and model citizen)

Although this book is offered as a portrait of a young Russian terrorist who eventually became a beloved professor of mathematics at the University of South Dakota, it is also an invaluable look into the minds of terrorists.
Russia, in the latter half of the nineteenth century, consisted of a newly educated commercial and industrial class that was rising in wealth and power -- perhaps 10 percent of the population. The other 90 percent were peasants, totally dedicated to the monarchy with an absolute trust the Czar would solve all of their problems.
The self-made newly rich, frustrated by the status quo, wanted revolutionary change that would make everyone rich. Sergei Degaev, the son of a doctor, was frustrated by the lack of social progress in Russia. Pipes explains, "When life offers little so that the results of ideological work are not yet evident, the activist wants to see some concrete, palpable manifestation of his will, his power."
If it sounds familiar, think of the well-educated middle class Palestinian youth who volunteer to be suicide bombers, plus the support they receive from other Palestinians. Pipes cites similar attitudes in Russia in the 1880's. Terror was born as the original "shock and awe" campaign; assassinate the Czar, and Russia would rise up in glorious revolt that would bring democracy, justice and prosperity for all.
Pipes writes, "For some dimly understood reason, in modern societies from time to time, a sizable body of the young is seized by an overpowering destructive urge which, at the same time, exhibits self-destructive symptoms."
Degaev became part of a terrorist network dedicated to changing the entire social structure and attitudes of Russia by means of a few assassinations. Terrorists killed Czar Alexander II in 1881. But when US President James Garfield was assassinated the same year, Degaev's group wrote to Americans, "In a country where individual freedom offers opportunities for honest ideological struggle, where the free will of the nation determines not only the law but also the personality of those who govern -- in such a country, political assassination as a means of struggle is a manifestation of the same despotic spirit, the destruction of which in Russia is our goal . . . . . violence is justified only when it is directed against violence."
Keep in mind the vast social changes the world was seeing in the second half of the nineteenth century through industrialization and global trade; America fought a bloody civil war pitting the new industrialism against the old slave-owning mentality. For many, whether in America with the new industrialization or in Russia with the overthrow of the Czar, the future held unlimited promise and opportunities.
It's hardly new. Eric Hoffer in 'The True Believer' illustrates the rage of those who expect instant utopia and will blindly follow anyone who promises fulfillment. Pipes explains that ". . . since in our imperfect world there are always matters that can be improved, 'causes' can always be found to justify the urge to destroy and murder."
Degaev helped kill the head of the Czar's secret police. Then, he fled to America where, in a society that offered him unlimited opportunity, he became a model citizen. If you can understand Degaev, and Pipes offers an extraordinary study of his character that will fascinate anyone, you will get an insight into the mind of a terrorist.
After Sept. 11, 2001, Americans asked, "Why do they hate us?" Pipes never addresses that issue directly, but by looking into the motives of Degaev, he suggests the underlying target of terrorist hatred is their own limitations and powerlessness. If people feel limited in their opportunities, terrorism is one response.
Pipes doesn't address the issues of Sept. 11, 2001; nor of protecting our society from terrorism. It's not the purpose of his book. Instead, he looks at the "Why" of terrorism and suggests answers that also explain recent events.
It's a superb book for people who like to think for themselves.

People's Will versus the Russian Secret Police.

A great little book about the war between the Russian Secret Police and the terrorist organization People's Will. The Russian Secret Police was headed by Lieutenant Colonel Sudeikin and the People's Will by Vera Figner. The People's Will was executing high Tsarist officials and the Russian Secret Police decided to destroy the People's Will from within. They turned members of this terrorist party against the organization and destroyed it. Sergei Degaev was turned and betrayed his comrades. When he finally came to terms with himself, he confided his betrayal to the People's Will and they helped him kill Sudeikin. He then emigrates to the United States where he becomes a Professor of Mathematics at the University of North Dakota.
This is an interesting and quick read. I find it fascinating that some of the Russian Secret Police actually collaborated with the People's Will. For a similar story of betrayal, see

Gert Biesta (www.gertbiesta.com) is Professor of Educational Theory and Policy at the University of Luxembourg, former president of the Philosophy of Education Society USA, and editor-in-chief of the journal Studies in Philosophy and Education. He has published widely on the theory and philosophy of education. With Paradigm Publishers he published Beyond Learning: Democratic Education for a Human Future (2006) – winner of the 2008 American Educational Studies Association Critics' Choice Book Award – and Good Education in an Age of Measurement: Ethics, Politics, Democracy (2010). He also co-edited George Herbert Mead's The Philosophy of Education (2008).
