About the Author

Deborah J. Short is a professional development consultant and a senior research associate at the Center for Applied Linguistics in Washington, DC. She co-developed the SIOP® Model for sheltered instruction and has directed national research studies on English language learn-ers funded by the Carnegie Corporation, the Rockefeller Foundation, and the U.S. Dept. of Education. She recently chaired an expert panel on adolescent ELL literacy. As the director of Academic Language Research & Training, Dr. Short provides professional development on sheltered instruction and academic literacy around the U.S. and abroad. She has numerous publications, including the SIOP® book series and five ESL textbook series for National Geographic/Hampton-Brown. She has taught English as a second/foreign language in New York, California, Virginia, and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

 

Jana Echevarría is a Professor Emerita at California State University, Long Beach. She has taught in elementary, middle, and high schools in general education, special education, ESL, and bilingual programs. She has lived in Taiwan, Spain and Mexico. An internationally known expert on second language learners, Dr. Echevarría is a Fulbright Specialist. Her research and publications focus on effective instruction for English learners, including those with learning disabilities. Currently, she is Co-Principal Investigator with the Center for Research on the Educational Achievement and Teaching of English Language Learners (CREATE) funded by the U.S. Department of Education, Institute of Education Sciences (IES). In 2005, Dr. Echevarría was selected as Outstanding Professor at CSULB.

 

MaryEllen Vogt, Ed.D., is Professor Emerita of Education at California State University, Long Beach. MaryEllen has been a classroom teacher, reading specialist, special education specialist, curriculum coordinator, and university teacher educator. She received her doctorate from the University of California, Berkeley, and is a co-author of fifteen books, including Reading Specialists and Literacy Coaches in the Real World (3rd ed., 2011) and the SIOP® book series. Her research interests include improving comprehension in the content areas, teacher change and development, and content literacy and language acquisition for English learners. She was inducted into the California Reading Hall of Fame, received her university’s Distinguished Faculty Teaching Award, and served as President of the International Reading Association in 2004–2005.

Great Teacher Resource

I was required to take an ELL course a few years ago. This course focused on the SIOP method and used Making Content Comprehensible for English Learners: The SIOP Model (3rd Edition) (SIOP Series) as its textbook. I purchased the book that is being reviewed because I felt it would be a good companion to the original.

Well, I was right. This book has so many wonderful, practical ideas that I can use throughout the school year. Not only will I use these ideas for my ELL students, but for all my students as well. I particularly like the numerous ways to build background before teaching a new topic. This is an area which is so important but many teachers tend to overlook.

I recommend this book and the SIOP method for any teacher who has ELL students in the classroom and must comply with state requirements.

Lots of good ideas

I bought this book to go with a 5-day, 45-clock-hour SEI course. We've actually done some of the activities in class and the majority require planning, but not too much prep time. The book is well-written and organized in a logical fashion. A good resource for teachers who deal with a lot of ELL students (like here in central AZ.)

This book is like the bible for teaching ESL!!! There are 99 strategies (hence the title) that each have content and language objectives (when appropriate). LOVE THIS BOOK!!!!

Great Writer

I could only give it a four though because it seems to be directed specifically at black young men and that is a shame...it should be for EVERY young man to read. The reason I say this was I am in college to learn to teach art k. - 12 and as a white person I was given the task of acquainting myself with black culture so i could teach black children, per them, more effectively. I have a young son and 4 brothers, all white, and I can tell you that this is the same advice any color man would give to any color child. I also have cousins who are mixed. OUTSTANDING BOOK. ...and I hope the marketing changes to emphasis our similarities, not our differences. ...I am just speaking to the marketing because Mr. Harper presents men and women of all colors for young people to emulate, including John Kennedy...my black uncle was with Robert Kennedy the night before he died. Mr. Harper your book is just great.

I have read this book, and I personally wish I had the book when i was growing up. This is the type of gudie that would lead a young man to a better path. Too many of young men of color are in trouble and labeled as troublemakers. Here is a guide that a father,uncle or mentor could use to help a young man to develop. The 100 Black Men service organization has a affirmation

"What they see is what they will be". This is a great read

After re-reading the book, I have purchased the paperback and I'm sending it to my nephew. To Manifest his destiny, I believe thsi book will be intrumental in helping him reach his goal of going to college this year. I also believe if any of my other nephews read the book it will help them along with thier destinies as well. Once again I recomend this book for any father trying to keep his son on the straight and narrow or uncle, big brother or father figure

forget the title

Forget about the title. Harper has crafted a fabulous book that will appeal to nearly all teens -- not just at-risk African-American boys. While the book speaks directly to African-American males, its smart yet cool approach to the problems that plague all teens, but particularly young people who are poor or members of a minority group, will also be a hit with girls and members of other beleaguered minority groups, as well. The language is laden with slang but intelligent, and both Harper and his extremely phat friends will make inroads where even caring teachers and parents might not. The book could easily have become sappy, but it never does.

Harper's inclusion of his celebrity friends and of full-color photographs of him partying with them might provoke some teen to read the book who might not at first been inclined to do so. It was another spot-on move by Harper. I am really grateful to him for providing young people with such a frank blueprint for growth.

Students who might be Caucasian and affluent will still love the book's message that everyone -- even handsome, successful TV stars -- sometimes feel lonely, have trouble approaching members of the opposite sex, and make mistakes.

What about straight-A students bound for Yale? They will be attracted to Harper, who graduated from Harvard Law School cum laude. The school's jocks will love that Harper was a college football hero. For the free spirits out there, Harper begins each chapter with a pithy quote from sources as disparate as the Persian poet Rumi, former President Bill Clinton, and rapper Andre 3000 (nee André Benjamin). Harper really has a hook for most of the cliques in American high schools.

This was a pleasant surprise! I've been wanting to read Maisey Yates for a while now, and this freebie seemed like a good place to start.

I'm so glad I did! The writing was excellent, and I was surprised by how this short novella packed quite the punch! It was sweet, hot, and emotional.

Best friends to lovers isn't one of my favorite tropes because there's never enough tension for me. I was proven wrong with this one, and that makes me incredibly happy.

I'm definitely going to check out the rest of the series!

Take me. Back to English class.

I didn't judge this book by its cover. It took a whole four paragraphs to realize I was going to hate it. Here's the fourth paragraph:

"Thanks to Travis Beringer. Who had wandered away from her at some point during the party. Probably looking to get kissed under the mistletoe. Which was the hazard of bringing a date who would never really be your date."

Normally I don't like to isolate direct quotes in a review because ripping them out of context is unfair, but here context is unnecessary. Do you see the problem? There are no complete sentences there, only fragments. The ENTIRE book is like that. First person narration doesn't have to mean disjointed stream-of-consciousness writing. (See the infinitely better "Intrusion" by Charlotte Stein for an example of first person done right.)

What about the story itself? For a minute I thought a compelling mystery was going to come out of the tragic event that kicks off the book, but no. The friend's messy death is just an excuse for the leads to go to a hotel and have boring sex.

Don't bother with this one.

Loved It!

What a way to start a trilogy! Take Me is the prequel to this series. The stage is set and the next three books will lead up to the conclusion. This novella is about best friends Travis Beringer and Sydney Davis and how their relationship revolves after the shocking death of Sydney's roommate at a Christmas party in 2004. I look forward to following the chain of events in the coming books.

My friend, Ken Fong, found the book so compelling that he bought a bushel so he can give a copy to each of his friends as he ran into them in daily encounters. At age 90, this is most likely the last book by Lee Kuan Yew. Lee was Singapore’s first prime minister in 1959 and led the city state to full independence in 1965 when the rest of Malaysia rather unceremoniously invited Singapore to go their separate ways. By the time he stepped down in 1990, Singapore has been transformed into a First World metropolis. His is a legacy of what good government is like and how a successful national leader should behave.

As the book jacket stated, with little else left to prove, he looks ahead to offer his unvarnished view of the future shape of the world. In reading his view of the world, the reader will come to understand the core beliefs of this remarkable man. Some of these include:

(1) For any nation to succeed, clean government is a must. Road to a clean government is to pay the civil servants generously so that there is no reason for corruption. For those that do stray and gets caught, the punishment needs to be harsh for betraying the public trust.

(2) Democracy is no panacea. If the citizens are poorly educated and have no idea of what democracy is all about and if the country lacks a history of progressive thinking and culture of individual equality, the introduction of democracy will fail. As Lee predicted in his book, winter inevitably followed Arab Spring because tribal based feudal systems of the Middle East cannot nurture democracy.

(3) Education is the necessary foundation to any successful developing nation and the access to quality education must be equal to all citizens, male and female. Educated workforce is vital to economic development and a growing economy gives the population opportunities to a better life and thus a willingness to support their government. Thus in his view, the caste system will always hold India back from realizing its full potential and keeping women from education will block the development of Islamic countries.

(4) Diversity in a population trumps homogeneous population because diversity means more diverse gene pool and greater range of creative thinking and capacity for innovation. From his point of view, the U.S. greatest strength is its welcoming attitude towards immigrants. By the same token, Japan’s inability to accept anything foreign, even ethnic Japanese who has lived abroad is the root of its inevitable decline.

Hi book deals with major global topics and each major regions of the world. On China, his impression of Xi Jinping is in the “Nelson Mandela class of persons,” and Deng Xiaoping is undoubtedly the most impressive international leader he has ever met. Key difference between the US (a benign power) and China is that China does not believe in “evangelizing their form of government.” His biggest concern on China is if the future young generation of Chinese, not having experienced the challenges of China’s difficult past, gets overly nationalistic and aggressive.

From his visits to the U.S, “I came to appreciate fully the dynamism of the entrepreneurial American.” Lee sees long-term success of the U.S. resting on its ability to continue to attract “bright and restless immigrants from the world.” As for the competing influences of the U.S. and China in Asia, he felt that even though the US military budget is still six times greater than that of China, China has advantage of proximity in competing for influence in its neighboring states. He seems to think that both sides need to find mutual accommodations around a stale mate.

Lee is considerably less optimistic about Europe. He sees two major hindrances. The flaw behind the Euro is monetary integration without fiscal integration between 27 nations with wide and disparate stages of economic development. He sees no hope for fiscal integration ever. Secondly, Europe is afflicted with the welfare state mentality and stifling labor laws that discourage entrepreneurialism, innovation and striving for productivity. Rather condescendingly, Lee thought Europe might be able to get away with the welfare state mind-set if they were competing with Fiji or Tonga.

The book jacket endorsements list some of world’s who’s who as heads of state, diplomats and international notables. But I don’t think that was the reason Ken liked the book so much that he became a volunteer propagandist of Lee’s worldview. In Lee, he sees and the world sees a great statesman who successful synergized his impeccable western education with his innate Asian values to show the world how a small port city can integrate into the global economy and let the people thrive. He has a lot to say and I hope the politicians in Washington will read his book.

Everyone with an interest in world politics must read this book. It should be made compulsory reading in DC. Lee Kuan Yew continues to press his claim as the last standing world statesman with this book!
