It's great that she can enjoy something that I also did ...

Goosebumps book were a big part of my childhood. I'd come home from school with a new book from the library, read the whole thing and would wait impatiently to get a different one the next day. Now my 7 year old loves Goosebumps and has started reading the books. She loves Slappy especially. We've been sitting down to read this one together. She'll read a couple pages out loud, then I will. She is already looking forward to reading the next one. It's great that she can enjoy something that I also did when I was growing up.

This was his first Goosebumps book and he enjoyed every moment

My 7 1/2 year old son wanted me to read something scary. I am a huge horror fan, so I couldn't read him my books (Stephen King and Anne Rice are bit too scary for his impressionable mind, I didn't want him to have nightmares). This was his first Goosebumps book and he enjoyed every moment, even the scary ones were a thrill for him. We've finished the 2nd one, "The Haunted Car' and now we're waiting on the third he chose, a story about a dog.

We bought this for our seven year old son, hes not a huge fan of reading just yet but we are trying to help that along. He really enjoyed this book and is really looking forward to the next one in the series.

About the Author

James Valentino holds a doctorate in applied mechanics from the Polytechnic University of New York. He has over 25 years experience teaching technology courses and many years in industry. Currently, he is professor and chairperson of the department of Mechanical Engineering Technology & Design Drafting at Queensborough Community College (CUNY). He is a member of Sigma XI, a senior member of SME, and coauthor of Learning Mastercam X2 Mill Step-by-Step, also published by Industrial Press.

Joseph Goldenberg is Associate Professor, Department of Engineering Technology, and Director of Manufacturing Processes Laboratory at Queensborough Community College, New York. Professor Goldenberg holds an Engineer Degree in Machine Tool Technology, Lvov Polytechnic institute, USSR; and an MS in Manufacturing Engineering, Brooklyn Polytechnic University. He has PhD equivalency, granted by CUNY Board of Trusties; and holds the EIT in New York State. With over 45 years of experience as a mechanical engineer and machine tool designer, Goldenberg is an expert in CNC, CAD/CAM programming, and manufacturing management. He is the founder and President of the Center for Advanced Manufacturing Studies, a company dedicated to training and advising manufacturing personnel in the latest developments of CNC and CADCAM technology.

Learning Mastercam X7 Mill Step by Step - A Good Investment for Student or Employee for the 2013 Sofware Release

Valentino and Goldenberg are also authors of a one of the best "intro to CNC" books published in recent years. If you are new to industrial CNC or are taking a skilled trades course involving Mastercam then this instructional book will provide excellent value and in my opinion contains considerably more detail that is not found in the competing CamInstructor series of training guides that typically used in conjunction with the Haas CNC mills and lathes found at most technical colleges in North America skilled trades programs. It would be very interesting to hear from others how they compare this book and the comprehensive series by Matthew Manton and Duane Weidinger that is also highly recommended if you want to learn Mastercam 2D, 3D 4&5D axis CNC mill software. If you use Mastercam X7 2D Mill at your place of employment then this step by step training guide may still be very useful to you. I have heard more than one exprienced user of Mastercam state that the software is so powerful they still are learning how to use its evolving functionality and new high speed toolpaths. If you are already an expert with older versions of Mastercam then this book will help serve as a reference to the new version released in 2013 assuming your employer hasn't sent you to an accelerated training course. One important caveat: The incorporation of the Mastercam Demo X7 HLE software on DVD and lessons are worth the purchase of the book alone. The included software will allow you to practice creating 2D mill geometry and assigning toolpaths, but will NOT allow you to output the result as G code that would make the part. To do that you will need to pay the folks at Mastercam for a seat and a valid SIM which with all the bells and whistles could easily run $25K upfront. For those home CNC hobbyists who are just getting started please understand that Mastercam software is used by many shops and companies who do not want to invest in the steep learning curve or typical expense of ~$40K seat cost and ~$4K yearly "maintenance" fees that the gold standard CNC CAM packages typically cost. Those programs are typically used in Fortune 500 companies manufacturing engineering groups such as those making custom products heading into the demanding aerospace market. If you are a small business owner looking to understand the power of Mastercam software then invest in this book and home learning environment software and decide if it will benefit. Final warning if you do invest in Mastercam be prepared to also buy very high end engineering workstations with lots of memory to run it.

could be better.

It's an alright book. I took this class with the person who wrote it. Pro. Goldenberg. At Queensborough Community College. He doesn't explain what to do, he expects us to know it this book provides examples of how to do things, but its not so clear on all steps, so you would have to figure it out on your own. Its a helpful book but the steps aren't 100% helpfull. I gave it 3 stars because.. well, find out for yourself, buy this book and you'll end up giving it 3 stars also.

The first book I got had a blank DVD in the back so I sent it back. The second book also had a blank DVD in the back. I already had a copy of mastercam x7 demo so I just kept the book. I emailed the publisher about getting a replacement DVD but got no response from them.

A disappointing, almost lazy finish to what had promise

I really enjoyed the first two books, and immediately read this third installment. It was such a let down. First, the book feels like it's mostly dialogue. There's very little action, and it's mostly the characters solving problems by talking it out. With such an exciting premise that had a lot of potential it was very disappointing. The intriguing idea of mythical gods among us was brilliant, but Card drove the potential into the dirt. Second, he takes it from being an interesting fantasy tale into strong religious territory and you lose the core of what the story was, and could have been because Card is so busy trying to force it to become a Mormon allegory. The conflicts are resolved so easily and with such little effort that it almost becomes boring.

Disappointing

I finished this book and immediately thought "WFT" Seriously, the tone of this book is LEAGUES from the 1st one. The 2nd one, while not as good as the first one, at least read as if it was being written by the same author. This one appears to have been ghost written by some weirdo who really like to put some people in the same space and spew unrelated stupid bull to each other. Then there are the long long long long long conversation that are REALLY boring. Also, new completely different magic system that screws up everything, new small enemies from nowhere and the families, which are the big bad in the 1st 2 books are really just a small nuisance in this one and are really only an afterthought. VERY disappointed and if this was more than a trilogy, i would NOT buy a 4th book.

Maybe my anticipation was too high. Also this is somewhat spoiler laden.

Pretty much what everyone has said... 1st book left it so it could go anywhere-limitless possibilities . 2nd book seemed like he was in a pickle with an all of a sudden cliff hanger. Then this one... Just 'thinks' it's problems away. When Danny has a challenge he simply figures out a solution in a page or so. Most awesome supporting characters get a cruddy dead end character plateau. I thought there was going to be a war in this one. And real conflict. Not that I'm against happy ending books. But Danny pretty much had no tough choices this book. I would rate it lower based on the ending, but since I did enjoy parts I decided to give it 2. Really the huge conflict at the end is like.... 3 or 4 paragraphs basically(with set) . Then the families are like yeah okay we'll comply no big deal. I've been looking forward to this book for a long time now and it's like phantom menace scale of a let down. Sure darth maul is awesome and is one of the best light saber fights yet... But everything else is disappointing.

This is an excellent book.

I was required to take a technical writing course for my degree and this is the book we used. It did an excellent job of explaining how things should be professionally written. It covers everything from asking for a recommendation to typing a resume to typing a proper e-mail. The layout of the book makes everything very easy to learn. After every concept there are examples of what a proper document should look like and sometimes even an example of what it should not look like. At the time, I thought I would never use anything I was learning, but after only two months out of the class I find myself using it to type up my resume. If you are in a job that requires professionalism in language and writing skills then this book is a must have. You will be surprised at what you can learn.

Excellent book! (not your typical half-baked Thompson/Pearson offering)

I used this book as a student in a technical writing class. The book was EXCELLENT, and served all levels of writers well. It starts with general good writing practices -- outlining, avoiding jargon, writing clearly (especially using proper grammar), being accurate, using parallel construction, writing for mixed audiences, using appropriate style and tone, and using good document design (both logical and format-wise). It moves through intermediate topics -- how to use line drawings and other graphics, writing various types of descriptions (chronological, spatial, and so forth), when to use the various types of definitions, and formatting numbers, measurements, and lists. This continues through advanced concepts -- writing instructions, writing for the web, writing in a group, formal report writing, and giving presentations and oral reports.

Some of the stongest points in this book (besides the no-nonsense writing itself) are:

* "models" (examples of writing) at the end of each chapter,
* "Advice From the Workplace" (excellent articles about workplace writing),
* Appendix A (grammar, puntuation, and mechanics -- including numbers and abbreviations),
* and Appendix B (frequently confused words).

Excellent examples are also part of the text throughout the book.

Sadly, many college students today do *not* have English skills that should be *required* to graduate high school! It's partly due to the large number of non-native English speakers attending college, but mostly it's just poor schooling. This book *does* provide the tools to help college students (who would probably *not pass* a standardized test) to improve their English as well as their writing, if they were given a free pass out of high school. It is up to the *professor* to see that grammar skills are being improved. Sadly, that was not the case in my class -- not at all.

Diana Reep has done all she can to serve both non-native speakers and advanced writers alike. Please, professors, if you buy a book like this, don't waste it by ignoring your students' shorcomings with the English language!

A Valuable Firsthand Account

An apparent reprint of a 19th century edition, this book contains what appear to be many of the original errors of the typesetters of the period as well as some archaic conventions (e.g., the use of open quote marks on every line of a continuing text). The font itself is somewhat blurred and hard to read and the book lacks any scholarly overview, putting the text into perspective. Still with this book we have a birdseye view of how things looked to a contemporary author who was in a position to observe the political tug-of-war around the issue of slavery firsthand.

Joshua Giddings, the author, was a well known politician and abolitionist in his day and served in Congress for a number of terms where he was witness to the great slavery debates of the era and ardent spokesperson against what he termed the "slave power" in American political and economic life. Describing the causes and proceedings of the conflict in Florida which culminated in the Second Seminole War, he notes how that war was mainly fought at the instigation of southern slave interests, initially in Georgia, South Carolina, Alabama and Florida, with the object of seizing the population of escaped slaves and their descendants who had fled to Florida while it was still under Spanish rule to gain sanctuary from the slavery to which they or their forebears had been subjected in the American colonies (later the American states).

Giddings blames southern fear of free blacks disrupting their own slave holdings and, even more, their venal desire to obtain slaves from among that black population living in the wilderness of Florida under the auspices of the loosely affiliated Seminole Indian bands (themselves exiles from the Creek tribal federation in the states immediately north of Florida). Andrew Jackson, when he became president in the early 1830's, initiated the removal of eastern Indians in the southern states to Indian territory set aside by the U.S. west of the Mississippi and Giddings argues that the Seminoles themselves only became the object of this removal because they were harboring the renegade ex-slave population.

What is unspoken here, but probably a factor, is that since the U.S. had long since banned the importation of slaves, the Florida renegades not only represented "lost property" to slave holders in the south but a valuable source of fresh slave labor since they could no longer hope to bring more slaves into the country. So economic factors were also at work, putting a premium on slave hunting and slave catching, thus making the re-enslavement of the renegades and their descendents an especially lucrative enterprise.

In Giddings' description of events, gleaned from his own firsthand observations in Congress and from reviewing and researching related materials (which, he claims, were sometimes suppressed by southern Congressmen to avoid open discussion of the role of slavery in causing and prolonging the Seminole War), the war itself was an elaborate charade to mask the slave-catching project of southern slavers and planters. The Seminole blacks lived with and fought beside the Seminole Indians who had harbored them from the first and proved among the most recalcitrant resisters in the struggles with the U.S. Army. The army, itself, had been dispatched into Florida to fight a war the southern planters had agitated for though, Giddings observes, the planters, in Florida at least, suffered the most serious depredations from the Indian and black resisters and ended up costing the federal government far more than had ever been dreamed.

One U.S. general, Thomas S. Jessup, made substantial progress against the Seminole and their allies but lost ground when, after promising freedom to the blacks who surrendered (in the form of relocation with the Seminole to Indian Territory) he reneged under pressure by the white planters and allowed them to "reclaim" the blacks who had voluntarily surrendered or been captured on the battlefield. This decision prompted the Indians and their black allies to flee again and agitated the general to such an extent that he took somewhat extraordinary measures to win his contest with the Indians. In one particularly egregious action, Jessup captured the well-known war chief, Osceola, and his lieutenant Coacoochee with their followers when these came in under a flag of truce. Later, after Coacoochee and others escaped from imprisonment (though Osceola died in American hands), Jessup threatened to bring in bloodhounds and actually did, indicating to Giddings that the war was really about capturing slaves, not beating the Indians.

Giddings notes that the record shows the blacks were among the hardest fighters, given that they could see what awaited them once delivered into American hands. However, eventually, seeing the handwriting on the wall, their leaders decided to take their chances and surrender to the military. According to Giddings' reading of the record, the American military had formed a respect for their Indian and black adversaries and for the most part proved unwilling to collaborate in the re-enslavement (or initial enslavement in some cases) of captured or surrendering blacks. Despite political pressure on Washington politicians and the executive branch of government, Giddings reports numerous instances of military officers working to thwart the slavers' efforts to grab the black prisoners before they could safely be conducted to Indian territory. In many cases these efforts weren't successful but in many others they were, resulting in a large body of blacks finding their way into the Arkansas-Oklahoma territory with the Seminoles who were also being incrementally captured (or who had surrendered) and were transported there.

Unfortunately, as Giddings notes, the Seminole blacks' were not home free in the new territory where the U.S. government allowed the Creek Indians to reassert their authority over the Seminole in various ways, contrary to the terms of the Seminole surrender. Creeks kept slaves and followed a slaveholding system akin to the white south. Given that they believed the Seminole rightly belonged under Creek governance and that many of the Seminole blacks were actually escaped Creek slaves or descendants of such people or were part of a group of blacks captured by Creek fighters in league with Jessup which entitled the captors to claim them as property, they pushed for re-enslavement of the Seminole blacks. In the end the government in Washington was prevailed upon to favor their claim and a large number of Seminole blacks and Indians fled Indian Territory across Texas for safety in Mexico which had outlawed slavery (in 1826).

Giddings is an earnest reporter but it's not clear he always gets it right or that his research is entirely reliable. He seems to confuse the black leader Abraham with the younger black leader John Horse and paints an overly heroic picture of the Indian war chief Coacoochee. Depending as much on word-of-mouth evidence as written documents, Giddings' sentiment seems totally sincere and his eyewitness account invaluable. But as a scholarly documenter of events he leaves something to be desired.

About the Author

Victor Anderson was the acclaimed author of Lilith’s Garden and Thorns of the Blood Rose. He contributed to Green Egg, Nemeton, and Witch Eye magazines and was a recipient of the Clover International Poetry Competition Award. Cora Anderson was the author of Fifty Years in the Feri Tradition and Kitchen Witch: A Memoir. She has contributed to Circle and Witch Eye magazines as well as Women's Circle. They were the coauthors of Etheric Anatomy: The Three Selves and Astral Travel and were Grand Masters of the Feri tradition as well as two of its foremost teachers.

A Journey to the Heart of Witchcraft

While not an initiate of any branch of the Feri tradition, I have a deep love and respect for its philosophy as presented by Victor and Cora Anderson, as well as by some of their direct initiates. "Heart of the Initiate," presents aspects of Feri Craft in the form of commentary and letters by the founders of the tradition themselves. While not a complete "how to" on the tradition(there is no self-initiation in Feri), much can be learned by devouring and reflecting on the wisdom presented here as well as in other books by the Anderson's. In their usual style, Victor and Cora present what appear to be simple truths at the surface level, but when re-read and pondered, come to life with deeper meanings. In fact, it is this manner of writing in plain language, devoid of fluff and "self help" that seems to fill many mainstream books on the Craft, that makes these teachings sparkle like gold amidst the rubble. The discerning reader will also realize that not everything marketed as "Anderson Feri," is presented in quite the way the founders initially taught it (the concept of Red/Blue Mari or the nonchalant use of blue fire for instance). Covering concepts such as ethics, the path of the warrior, sexuality,the goddess as Mari, and the magic found in ordinary things such as paper boats, "Heart of the Initiate" touches what appears to be the true core *heart* of the tradition.

My word, this is extreme heavy! It sinks in like an iron weight and soars as an eagle into consciousness like an intense blue flame! These people are actually 'wise ones'; they do 'know'! And they're American, and have spoken. The book is an example of a truly American Witchcraft. If you think you need this book, you do. You will not be disappointed. This book is a practical, concise statement about the Feri Tradition. I have purposely not given you a peek at its contents. You need the first impact to fully acclimate your being to this document. It's a tiny tome and trove of reveal.

Read after 50 Years in the Feri Tradition

This book along with 50 YEARS IN THE FERI TRADITION by Cora Anderson is essential reading for those interested in the Anderson Feri Tradition. I mention the other book because HEART OF THE INITIATE: FERI LESSONS builds on what is presented in Cora's deep theological text. Both works are of vital importance to Seekers because with the diverse lineages within the Tradition, each with their own interpretations of this fascinating form of American Traditional Witchcraft, it can sometimes be confusing to know exactly what these witches believe. When in doubt go to the source(s) or in this case the founders.

The two books are very different in tone. As I mentioned previously 50 YEARS is a deep theological text in spite of its small size (both books are slender volumes that can be read in a single setting), which took me three readings to adequately absorb and comprehend all the nuisances.

Heart of the Initiate was easier to read and understand (perhaps because it is comprised of correspondences that break up the material into shorter tidbits?). I differ in opinion with the reviewer who suggested the book was more appropriate for experienced Feri practitioners. Provided you read 50 YEARS first, the material flows seamlessly.

Lastly, Victor Anderson provides a self dedication rite at the end of the book, which the Feri founder adapted from the rite in Paul Huson's classic work Mastering Witchcraft (1970).
