NOT WORTH THE PAPER ITS PRINTED ON

This is a terrible buy, not even worth the paper it is printed on. Everything is pixelated and blurry and the final product isn't even shown in the end. It doesn't teach you how to draw eyes or faces, only four different characters that look terrible! Might I also point out it was PRINTED THREE DAYS BEFORE IT ARRIVED?? This "big" book is a lie and does not fit the description at all. Don't waste your money!

sereously this book is sooooooooo not wat i expected i thought it would have a nice and clean look on how to draw a manga male but it just shows you crap, to my understanding the pictures dosent even have a nice defined crisp look to them they are more like bluring and crappy drawings they dont even show you how to draw the nice character on the cover so not pleased not at all

A comprehensive list of Eucharistic Miracles

This book contains over 100 brief accounts of Eucharistic Miracles around the world. It has forwards by Cardinal Raymond Burke, Msgr. Martinelli and Fr. John Hardon, which give catechetical explanations into the Church's teaching on these miracles and private revelations. From there the book is divided into sections based on country.

This book is not an apologetical work; for those looking for documentation and sources should probably refer to Joan Carroll Cruz's book on Eucharistic Miracles, which deals with specific cases more in depth. The book here gives only a page or two to each miracle, containing brief descriptions and very helpful pictures. These stories were presented as an Exhibition, each having its own posterboard, which have been condensed to book format. In the process of condensing the book, some of the photos are a bit too small to see, and others are quite fuzzy, which points to a bit of poor editing. Other than that, this book is an excellent resource to see how many wonderful ways Our Lord has given Himself to us in the Eucharist!

Necessary But Could Be So Much Better

Dorsch and Dorsch's Understanding Anesthesia Equipment is simply the most thorough book on anesthesia equipment out there that I am aware of. You will find most of the general basics of anesthesia equipment in Barash's Clinical Anesthesia and even more summary books like Stoelting's Basics of Anesthesia) and Morgan & Mikhail's Clinical Anesthesiology. Nevertheless, those books tend to not give you the ins-and-outs of all of the various equipment out there. Dorsch & Dorsch provide very detailed information ad nauseum. However, the endless black-and-white diagrams and black-and-white photos (though it appears very accurate) make the book very difficult to find the precise information that you are looking for. And the black-and-white diagrams tend to be much more difficult to understand than is necessary. For a book that has been through so many revisions and costs well upward of a hundred bucks, I would expect some color photos and some better constructed color diagrams.

The book does seem thorough, but is simply so much more difficult to use than it needs to be. Using Dorsch & Dorsch as a base text, we are strongly in need of a full revision aimed at formatting, photo, and diagram revisions.

The website included in the book offers a searchable text and a test bank. The search engine on the text is poor and very difficult to use. I find myself going to the chapter of interest and using a ctrl-f browser-based search of the page. The online quizzes are the exact same as is found at the end of each chapter. I have taken about half of the quizzes and have found errors in the online-based quiz bank in approximately half of those that I took. In need of some quality control. Nevertheless, I am appreciative of the online access to the text.

Disappointed

I am sad that this will be the last volume by authors I have relied on since I began in anesthesia in 1981. This is my third purchase of one of their works but I must say that I am dissappointed. Much of the charm of earlier editions (I own 1st and 4th) seems to be missing and there seems to be a reliance on manufacturer's supplied illustrations. Explanations and diagrams seem to come directly from the manufactuer.

That being said I would still recommend this book to students (both SRNAs and Resident physcians)as a required text. This book will alow you to be competent to trouble shoot a system while waiting for BME to arrive,or for you to feel confident to swap a machine in the middle of a case. It gives you a familiarization of much adjunct equipment before you use it the first time. It apprises you of possible hazards and deals with evnvironmental issues in anesthetizing locations.

Not their best work, but have not seen anyone else consistently cover this topic over the span of their work. A replacement will be hard to find, and future practitioners will suffer with their retirement.

its a "stay at home book" tho
big and heavy
the pages are not as easy to read since its all black and white and there's alot of material to read plus the pictures are not as many as i would have liked
but still a very good book
glad i got it for my residency
always on top of my info because of it

Delving deeper into Tibetan Buddhism

July 2014: Since writing many book reviews of the past, much has changed, I have discovered much more. I have come to see and have had exposed many of the deceptions and errors associated with Gnosticism, this even after becoming a Gnostic priest. My faith in Christ has been my anchor and I press on with him who shed his blood for me. I am tempted to delete many of my reviews, as I have already done; time will tell.

Lama Anagarika Govinda, a German who spent over twenty years studying at the feet of masters in Tibetan hermitages and monasteries, a member of the Kargyutpa order, brings to us much of Tibetan Esotericism in this book. In this book, Lam Anagarika Govinda clarifies many misconceptions regarding Tibetan Buddhism, mantra and more specifically, the mantra `Om Mani Padme Om'.

Essentially this book is a breakdown of the mantra `Om Mani Padme Hum' or rather `Om Mani Peme hum' according to the phonetic laws of the Tibetan language I.e. Part One `Om' The Path of Universality. Part Two `Mani' The Path of Unification and of Inner Equality. Part Three `Padma' The Path of Creative Vision. Part Four `Hum' The Path of Integration. Part Five `Om Mani Padme Hum' The Path of the Great Mantra.

The author discusses many topics such as mantra, the history of mantra and the power of the verb, the five skandhas the doctrine of consciousness, the psychic centres of the kundalini-yoga and their physiological counterparts, the chakras, physical and psychic functions of prana and the principle of motion (vayu) as starting-point of meditation, transversing the Bardo, the three currents of force and their channels in the human body i.e. Ida, pingala and susumna, the Tantras, the yoga of the inner fire in the Tibetan system of meditation (Tapas & Gtum-mo) and the Tibetan wheel of life etc. I can only recall one practice given in this book and this is a description as given in the `Tractate of the six doctrines'; see page 170-178. This practice deals with Mantra visualisation and raising the Kundalini, I make note of this here for those of you who are interested and for my benefit when I look for these pages again for when I might attempt this practice myself.

I especially enjoyed the latter part of this book which provided excellent information on thousand armed Avalokitesvara (the embodiment of active compassion) and Avalokitesvara's descent into the six realms of this world. This then followed on with information regarding the path of the Bodhisattvas I.e. the path of renunciation and sacrifice for humanity. The book ends with information on the fifth Dhyani-Buddha, the Lord of the all-encompassing wisdom, this essentially deals with `Ah', The Path of Action, "the fact that the Buddha's teachings is not some nebulous idealism, a chasing after eternal but unattainable ideals, but a doctrine of self realisation, of action, a practical doctrine, a path that can be trodden by all who are seriously bent on its aim."

This book also clarifies the differences between Hindu and Tibetan yoga. "A comparison of the Hindu Tantras with those of Buddhism (which are mostly preserved in Tibet and which therefore have long remained unnoticed by Indologists) not only shows an astonishing divergence of methods and aims, in spite of external similarities, but proves the spiritual and historical priority and originality of the Buddhist Tantras." Pg 94

As a student of Gnosis, this book filled in some blanks for me. I plan to continue reading other books on Tibetan Buddhism and especially those books made reference to by Lama Anagarika Govinda in this book I.e. `Tibet's Great Yogi Milarepa', `Tibetan Yoga & Secret Doctrines', `The Tibetan Book of the Great Liberation' (Evans-Wentz) and also `The Serpent Power' (Avalon, Arthur).

Rather technical, good scope

This is a fine book by a 20th century practitioner, a German who became a Buddhist monk in a SE Asia monastery and traveled through Tibet with his wife Li Gotami (who published a book of fascinating photographs). The author is probably best known for both this work, which is probably a modern classic, and for "The Way of the White Clouds" a more personal description of Buddhism. He also wrote "A Living Buddhism for the West." The latter two books reflect his personal approach making them more easily comprehended and accessible than many texts from Tibetan Buddhist masters. This book, however, is far less accessible, but its topic may preclude a more personal approach. It covers a lot of territory though it is quite technical in many places. It provides an extensive and detailed description of the five Dyani (meditation) Buddhas and their families-the best I've seen. Many modern texts merely allude to these or mention one or two of them (e.g. Akshoba or Amitabha). It's not an easy read.

One of the greatest writers of our time.

If you wish to explore the word and symbol, this profoundly spiritual volume leads one there. Om, universal consciousness, and all the dhyana Buddhas are presented with clarity and understanding. What's more, the poetry in which Lama Govinda moves and winds this classic work is a tribute to the man's artistry in painting wisdom as something within everyone's reach.
