Beautiful Mornin': The Broadway Musical in the 1940s, by Ethan Mordden

"Music and girls are the soul of musical comedy," one critic wrote, early in the 1940s. But this was the age that wanted more than melody and kickline form its musical shows. The form had been running on empty for too long, as a formula for the assembly of spare parts--star comics, generic love songs, rumba dancers, Ethel Merman. If Rodgers and Hammerstein hadn't existed, Broadway would have had to invent them; and Oklahoma! and Carousel came along just in time to announce the New Formula for Writing Musicals: Don't have a formula.
Instead, start with strong characters and atmosphere: Oklahoma!'s murderous romantic triangle set against a frontier society that has to learn what democracy is in order to deserve it; or Carousel's dysfunctional family seen in the context of class and gender war.
With the vitality and occasionally outrageous humor that Ethan Mordden's readers take for granted, the author ranges through the decade's classics--Pal Joey, Lady in the Dark, On the Town, Annie Get Your Gun, Phinian's Rainbow, Brigadoon, Kiss Me, Kate, South Pacific. He also covers illuminating trivia--the spy thriller The Lady Comes Across, whose star got so into her role that she suffered paranoid hallucinations and had to be hospitalized; the smutty Follow the Girls, damned as "burlesque with a playbill" yet closing as the longest-run musical in Broadway history; Lute Song, in which Mary Martin and Nancy Reagan were Chinese; and the first "concept" musicals, Allegro and Love Life. Amid the fun, something revolutionary occurs. The 1920s created the musical and the 1930s gave it politics. In the 1940s, it found its soul.

From Publishers Weekly
Once again establishing that he is as impressive a nonfiction writer as he is a novelist (How Long Has This Been Going On?; Buddies), Mordden analyzes the many notable hits (and egregious flops) of the 1940s, and describes how they figured intoAand indeed establishedAthat period's importance to the Broadway musical theater. It was a decade of many milestones, chief among which was the emergence of Rodgers and Hammerstein with 1943's unlikely groundbreaker, Oklahoma ("all Broadway gaped as these two partnered up"), followed in 1945 by Carousel ("the piece that truly tells us what a Rodgers and Hammerstein show was"). Mordden's references are up-to-the-minute (he cites the late 1990s Encores! series of revivals at New York's City Center) and his research is meticulousAin his chapter on a particularly significant '40s development, "The Cast Album," he trounces the widely held notion that Oklahoma was the first show to be recorded (it was 1900's Floradora). His gift for the piquant phrase is delightfully evident (Harold Arlen's music for a Bloomer Girl duet is "a slithery wisteria jazz"), as is his fondness for the direct approach (Irving Berlin's Miss Liberty "was a total disaster... a bomb with two wonderful elementsAthe score and the dancing"). And though he delivers the expected encomiums to such stars of the decade as Agnes de Mille and Ethel Merman, he frequently airs provocative, somewhat unusual opinions, as when he says of the composer of Lady in the Dark and Lost in the Stars, "the Broadway musical would not have been what it was without Kurt Weill." Nor would it be nearly as enjoyable without this perceptive, witty and informative guided tour. (Oct.) America, following 1997's Make Believe (the 1920s) and 1998's Coming Up Roses (the '50s).

From Library Journal
For Broadway musicals, the decade of the 1940s opened with Oklahoma! and closed with South Pacific. In Mordden's opinion, Oklahoma! was a breakthrough and defining moment in musical theater due to its introduction of strong characters, atmosphere, and the integration of dance and song into the fabric of the story. Mordden (Make Believe: The Broadway Musical in the 1920s and Coming Up Roses: The Broadway Musical in the 1950s) uses the first third of his book to establish this belief, with explanations of other musicals that had innovative elements from the 1920s and 1930s. He also analyzes other 1940s musicals, such as On the Road, Annie Get Your Gun, Finian's Rainbow, and Brigadoon as well as lesser-known works. Recommended for theater collections.AJ. From Booklist
The 1940s were a time of change in the American musical. Although still sporadically popular, the old-fashioned musical comedy, with its silly plots and dependence on big stars, was being supplanted by such more serious, carefully conceived, and artfully executed shows as Oklahoma! and Carousel. This "Rodgers and Hammerstein revolution" was accompanied by another revolution, in recording technology, which produced the original cast record album, which helped transform hit shows into theatrical classics. Mordden's passionate, literate, painstakingly researched history charts the ups and downs of this crucial decade. As in his Make Believe (1997) and Coming Up Roses (1998), on the 1920s and 1950s musical, respectively, he focuses not only on a decade's big successes--in the '40s, Kiss Me Kate, Brigadoon, and Rodgers and Hammerstein's early work--but also on important shows that didn't become hits--such as, in the '40s, Lady in the Darkand shows that never had a chance. This procedure reveals how the musical form evolved, which innovations were readily accepted, and which were rejected. Essential reading for musical theater fans. Jack Helbig

Another masterpiece, even when walking the edge
By John McWhorter
Ethan Mordden is my favorite author of all time -- his breadth and depth of knowledge and critical acumen are utterly unsurpassed among writers on vintage American popular culture. In this book as in all of his others, the way he can, in a few quick, masterful strokes, make you feel like you are at an obscure, unrecorded musical which now exists only as yellowing files in a few libraries is nothing less than astounding. His combination of erudtion, wit and insight never fail to take my breath away. The decade-by-decade series of which this book is the third helps make life worth living, this one helping make sense of a particularly challenging ten years in musicals' history. Near the end, Mordden does indulge in some nervy speculations that could use some more backup, though. Was homophobia really the reason WHERE'S CHARLEY didn't get a cast album? If Porter's music for KISS ME, KATE was so good because he knew the score would be preserved on a record, then why didn't he keep writing at this level afterwards? Since SOUTH PACIFIC came at the end of the decade, we'd like it to be an apotheosis of the developments over that time, but would we really say that of this fine but chunky piece of work if it had come along in 1945? If the invention of the cast album was really why shows started running longer, then why have runs continued getting even longer since? Yet Mordden is such a treasure that one simply takes these as questions you wish you could take up with the master. Overall, no one writing in his bailiwick even approaches him; this book, like all of his work, is a national treasure.

Can't get enough of Mr. Mordden's mordant musical theater observations
By Victor Thomas
One day, someone will stitch together Ethan Mordden's Broadway musical books into one cohesive review of 20th century theater. In the meantime, Beautiful Mornin' is one of his tiptop decade reviews, and critical to his book series as this is the decade when Oklahoma changed everything since it opened. He is really good at tying together separate musical efforts into a larger context, and enlivens his accounts with some decidedly opinionated takes on what's god and what's not good. That is what makes this chronicle fun. He revels in his subject, and the writing shows that.

History Written with Wit and Style
By David
I have two advanced degrees in history and have read hundreds...and I mean hundreds of history books for one reason or another. But I have to say this series, especially this book, as well as the one immediately before and after it, are brilliant. I went into them knowing a great deal about the American musical theater but left with double the knowledge and a real, out loud laugh or two. Amazing books--if you love this very American art form, read these books!

What Do Exceptional Couples Know That Others Don't?

If roughly fifty percent of marriages fail, what about the other fifty percent--the ones that "succeed"? Are those couples who stay together necessarily happy?

No, not necessarily. In fact, many marriages that remain intact are far less than ideal. A mere seven percent are really good--in fact, exceptional. These couples have much greater than average passion, happiness, longevity, and fulfillment.

But if less-than-exceptional marriages are made up of men who are supposedly from Mars and women who are supposedly from Venus, what planet do exceptional husbands and wives come from? What are the secrets of exceptional couples. . .and what can they teach us?

Marriage therapist Gregory K. Popcak believes that ways of relating employed by exceptional couples can benefit all marriages. In The Exceptional Seven Percent, he looks at the most successful couples and exposes their secrets. Each chapter examines in detail the basic characteristics of exceptional couples, including:

   • Developing a marital imperative

   • Setting and achieving emotional goals

   • Cultivating exceptional levels of fidelity, loving, service, rapport, negotiation, gratitude, joy, and sexuality

Through anecdotes, analyses, exercises, and quizzes, you'll learn what your weaknesses are and how you can begin to make positive changes. You have the power to turn your marriage into the most precious thing in your life. Why settle for anything less?

Gregory K. Popcak, MSW, is a licensed psychotherapist who developed and now runs marriage preparation and enrichment seminars. He also writes regular marriage and family columns for popular and professional journals and runs a private practice. He lives outside Pittsburgh.

From Publishers Weekly
With a mature style that is intellectually appealing, Popcak shares his inspiring conviction that marriage can be a powerfully actualizing enterprise. Drawing on the results of several marriage studies, he contends that while most marriages are "conventional" (read: average), and some are even "impoverished," a fortunate 7% are "exceptional." Having a marriage in the exceptional category, says Popcak, requires a commitment to live your life according to a "Marital Imperative," a motto of sorts that identifies the most important qualities that each partner strives to manifest in life through the marriage. This imperative then becomes the basis for all decision making, including even minor daily activities. In this way, exceptional couples exhibit greater congruence between their actions and beliefs and stand a much greater chance of faithfully exemplifying their most desired personal qualities. Like Stephen Covey and Abraham Harold Maslow, Popcak focuses on the refinement of peak performance. Offering engaging exercises and checklists to help readers clarify their aims and progress along his theoretical pathway to self-actualization, he challenges conventional couples to recognize how much better their marriage could be with a few attitude adjustments and priority clarifications. Self-improvement aficionados will find his approach a welcome and refreshing addition to the genre. Illustrations not seen by PW. (June)

Turned our marriage around 180 degrees
By Amazon Customer
This is an exceptional book that aims at an attainable goal--attainable as long as you understand what you're trying to do. You can't get what you want if you don't know exactly what you want. I wanted an exceptional marriage, but didn't understand why it wasn't happening. Had I married the "wrong" person? Were we not as compatible as I thought when we got engaged?

It is absolutely exciting how radically for the better your married life can change when you systematically follow the principles in this book. It did in my case. And as I changed, so did my wife toward me.

So, what's the secret? Nothing less than living up to the commitment you happened to proclaim publicly on your wedding day--"to love and to cherish in good times and in bad...till death do us part." Is that unconditional or what?

Tall trees can't grow tall in shifting sands. An exceptional marriage is absolutely rooted in the solid ground of unconditional commitment.

Lofty language, but it all boils down to this: so many marriages fail when the participants get caught up in thinking "I'd be nice to her if only she were nice towards me," or "I'd do for her what she wants if only she would act towards me in such a way as to deserve it."

Children! Children! Hey, I used to hear those voices in my own head. I started to grow up when I found the courage to embrace the pain of admitting to myself that maybe I really wasn't the man or husband I wanted to be.

The authors of this book made it plainly obvious to me what I was doing wrong. I wasn't really secure in the person I had become at this point in my life, less than my own ideal. Heck, I had forgotten what that ideal was. (Springsteen's song "One Step Up" always tears me up when he sings "Somewhere along the line I got off track...")

That's where this book is so great. It asks you to be clear about what you want to be when you grow up.

So what does it take to have an exceptional marriage? Read this book. Decide who you want to BE. Choose daily to remind yourself to act lovingly toward your spouse whether your spouse happens to be her best self toward you that day or not. The authors discuss the different stages of improvement in marriage, and how you'll never get to the highest stage if you make your love dependent on circumstances of the moment. You need to see beyond the moment to your vision of what it means to be a great husband or wife.

Want a marriage that's better than average, that's exceptional? Then you've got to be bigger than yourself. Yes, you might even have to grow up. With the help of these authors, I have, and man, the view from here is incredible.

Helped me more than any other marriage book
By Abraham D. Alsop
Many books on marriage are designed to teach the basics of communication skills (love languages) to those desperate couples who are on the verge of divorce or abuse, helping them to rebuild their love. This book, however, is for the rest of us, who are in a good position already, who are deeply in love, and maybe even think we don't need help as it's all working just fine. Popcak calls us to a higher ideal, tells us to not settle for being just fine, but to try to be exceptional. Have that type of marriage that fulfills your life's dreams and works for the good of your children and society. The Exceptional Seven Percent does not hide the fact that it will take sacrifice and letting go of old ways of thinking, but it will be well worth it. With surveys and questions along the way, this book makes it easy to chart your progress as you advance through the stages towards being one of the world's happiest couples. Yes, it really is possible, if you're willing to work at it.

Best Marriage Book I've Seen
By Craig K. Galer
This is the best marriage book I've seen. It resonates strongly with my wife's and my experience in our 29-year (as of this writing) first marriage, and also showed us some very constructive ways to improve what we already count as a very good marriage.

Popcak's central theme is The Marital Imperative - sort-of a marital "mission statement" of shared spiritual goals and values - as a Guiding Principle for both spouses to refer themselves and each other to. Or, as Popcak glibly puts it, "What kind of person do you want to be when you grow up?" So that, if I am behaving in a way inconsistent with my own stated goals and values, my wife can 'call me up' to what I've already said is my own vision for the kind of person I want to be. (And it is amazing, isn't it, how we so easily manage to 'make exceptions' to The Kind of Person I Want to Be, when it comes to our spouse? Or our children?)

Popcak very clearly shows how 'Conventional' marriages fall short of what it takes to become Exceptional; how such common tactics as 'Scorekeeping' (a scrupulous focus on 'fairness' and a relentless drive to 'The 50-50 Marriage') and 'Marital Chicken' (a game to see which spouse can make the other one 'blink first' in an argument) have corrosive effects on marriage.

Popcak outlines nine Secrets of Exceptional Marriages - the Marital Imperative, Fidelity (not simply sexual fidelity, but rather fidelity to one's own spiritual values and ideals), Loving, Service, Rapport (a more-comprehensive kind of 'communication'), Negotiation (resolving differences), Gratitude, Joy, and Sexuality. What was stiking to me was how Service flows out of Love - it's the practical expression of Love; where Love 'gets real', so to speak, rather than simply good feelings - and, in turn, how Service fuels so many of the other 'secrets', especially Gratitude, Joy, and Sexuality. It amounts to something more like a '100-100 Marriage' - both spouses just 'go all-in' for each other.

I've read a few of Popcak's other books, and they have all been excellent. 'The Exceptional Seven Percent' is written for a more 'general' audience (as opposed to a specifically Christian or Catholic one), but the truths he communicates here are universal, and accessible to anyone, regardless of their specific 'spiritual' commitments.

This is a terrific book; it gives a very solid, straightforward account of what it takes to have a strong marriage, and how to move from wherever your marriage is into something stronger and more enduring.

Being Nuclear: Africans and the Global Uranium Trade (MIT Press), by Gabrielle Hecht

Uranium from Africa has long been a major source of fuel for nuclear power and atomic weapons, including the bomb dropped on Hiroshima. In 2003, after the infamous "yellow cake from Niger," Africa suddenly became notorious as a source of uranium, a component of nuclear weapons. But did that admit Niger, or any of Africa's other uranium-producing countries, to the select society of nuclear states? Does uranium itself count as a nuclear thing? In this book, Gabrielle Hecht lucidly probes the question of what it means for something--a state, an object, an industry, a workplace--to be "nuclear."

Hecht shows that questions about being nuclear--a state that she calls "nuclearity"--lie at the heart of today's global nuclear order and the relationships between "developing nations" (often former colonies) and "nuclear powers" (often former colonizers). Hecht enters African nuclear worlds, focusing on miners and the occupational hazard of radiation exposure. Could a mine be a nuclear workplace if (as in some South African mines) its radiation levels went undetected and unmeasured? With this book, Hecht is the first to put Africa in the nuclear world, and the nuclear world in Africa. By doing so, she remakes our understanding of the nuclear age.

Review

Gabrielle Hecht's Being Nuclear is a monumental new study of the geopolitics of uranium. It profoundly shifts how we think about things marked 'nuclear,' underscoring the complex historical and technopolitical work embedded in any use of the term. Beautifully written and meticulously researched -- a major contribution.

(Joseph Masco, University of Chicago; author of The Nuclear Borderlands: The Manhattan Project in Post-Cold War New Mexico)

This impassioned, broad-ranging, and beautifully written book puts the bodies of ordinary people at the very center of a sweeping study of the geopolitics and cultural anxieties that surround all things nuclear. Being Nuclear reorients the study of occupational health by calling attention to vital questions of knowledge production, activism, and governance in a postcolonial world.

(Steven Epstein, Professor of Sociology and John C. Shaffer Professor in the Humanities, Northwestern University; author of Inclusion: The Politics of Difference in Medical Research)

Being Nuclear is nothing short of pathbreaking. Hecht's analysis of the techno-politics of African uranium production presents a critical and convincing rethinking of the global nuclear order. This is a very smart book, based on daunting and original research, on a topic of genuine importance.

(Julie Livingston, Associate Professor of History, Rutgers University)

Hecht has written the first history of nuclear Africa which, given the importance of the subject and the obstacles she faced, is a major achievement.

(Jock McCulloch, Journal of African History)

Not only does the book stand out as one of the most comprehensive attempts to study the history of uranium mining in Africa, it also caters to an expansive academic audience -- from historians of science and technology and sociologists and anthropologists of science, to those taking a broader interest in labour rights, public health issues and mining corporations.

(Jayita Sarkar The British Journal for the History of Science)

Being Nuclear has very important things to say about the legacies of empire. Hecht persuasively shows how global nuclear agencies reproduced colonial logics and inequalities... It seems destined to become essential reading for those interested in uranium and Africa, as well as in issues of global nuclearity.

(Journal of Modern History)

Thoroughly researched and wonderfully presented work on a topic that has been 'invisible' for too long.
By A. Silver
This work is an absolute essential not only when attempting to discover integral facts about the uranium trade in Africa, but to illuminate the history of uranium and its status as either a nuclear or banal commodity. From investigating the nebulous ways in which this ore was initially priced to revealing the ways in which its 'nuclearity' and health hazards were ambiguously or opaquely handled, especially in the light of Africa's invisibilty in neocolonial eyes, I believe the truth of the history of the uranium trade should be standard knowledge for all, and, especially for those who truly wish to examine the past, present and future of the nuclear industry. If so much of the inner workings of this trade have been hidden from the general public, how then should the general public be willing to place its faith in the reassurances of those who propose the ultimate safety and ethical soundness of this as a power source.

nuclearity
By Jeffrey Hart
This is a very well written book about the sourcing of Uranium from African countries for use in both nuclear weapons and power plants. The author does this by telling the story of the Uranium mines in Gabon, Congo (Zaire), Niger, and South Africa. The second half of the book focuses on describing the bad labor conditions in the mines; the first establishes a line of argumentation about “nuclearity” – which is an historically contingent concept that relates developments in the Cold War and later the post September 11 world to the way people think about the uranium deposits in Africa. The author provides particularly interesting insights about how the “market” for uranium developed. She highlights the importance of the dual-use nature of uranium and the limited visibility of the trade in uranium for weapons use. The book provides useful background for understanding the defense of the apartheid regime in South Africa by Britain and the United States and attempts by the administration of George W. Bush to justify the war in Iraq in 1993 by citing transfers of “yellow cake” from Niger as evidence of the resumption of the Iraqi nuclear weapons program.

Regenesis: How Synthetic Biology Will Reinvent Nature and Ourselves, by George M. Church, Ed Regis

“Bold and provocative… Regenesis tells of recent advances that may soon yield endless supplies of renewable energy, increased longevity and the return of long-extinct species.”—New Scientist

In Regenesis, Harvard biologist George Church and science writer Ed Regis explore the possibilities—and perils—of the emerging field of synthetic biology. Synthetic biology, in which living organisms are selectively altered by modifying substantial portions of their genomes, allows for the creation of entirely new species of organisms. These technologies—far from the out-of-control nightmare depicted in science fiction—have the power to improve human and animal health, increase our intelligence, enhance our memory, and even extend our life span. A breathtaking look at the potential of this world-changing technology, Regenesis is nothing less than a guide to the future of life.

could have been one chapter
By John
A book outlining the future of sythetic biology and its implications is long overdue, but this book achieves neither. The examples given of synthetic biology are poorly described and tend to jump around (the very interesting chapter titles actually have no bearing on what is written and give the false impression that the book is structured). The authors spent very little time developing a cohesive philosophy about how our culture should approach this novel technology and instead resort to a "gee isn't that cool" kind of approach.

Overall, the book just seemed really fluffy. Many of the points made were repeated over and over without any depth. Instead, the authors fill pages by going into extensive detail about irrelevant matters, such as devoting several pages to describing the building where a convention on synthetic biology was hosted.

As a biology researcher, I can say this is definitely not for anyone with a background in science. Also, lay people looking for examples of synthetic biology should look elsewhere because this book does a poor job explaining things. Finally, those interested in the ethics of these issues will not find any interested arguments here on either side.

A Brief Summary and Review
By A. D. Thibeault
*A full executive summary of this book is available here: An Executive Summary of George M. Church and Ed Regis's 'Regenesis: How Synthetic Biology Will Reinvent Nature and Ourselves'

DNA was only discovered about a century ago, and its structure remained a mystery until about half a century ago, but since this time our knowledge and understanding of DNA has grown immensely (indeed exponentially). What's more, this understanding has evolved to include not just an understanding of how DNA works, but also how it can be manipulated to help advance our ends. The most glaring example here is the phenomenon of genetically modified food. Though not without controversy initially (and some fringe opposition that lives on to this day), it is fair to say that genetically modified food was one of the major scientific advances of the 20th century. Over and above this, our understanding of DNA appeared to reach its most impressive manifestation with the successful sequencing of the human genome in the year 2000.

For the genetics professor and pioneering genetic engineer George Church, however, genetically modified food and the Human Genome Project are but the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the potential of genomics. Indeed, since the year 2005, the exponential growth rate in our ability to read and write DNA has increased from 1.5-fold per year (a rate that matches Moore's law), to the incredible rate of 10-fold per year (p. 243). This explosion in scientific and technological progress has resulted in dramatic advancements in the areas of biochemicals, biomaterials, biofuels and biomedicine. What's more, advancements in these technologies are but in their incipient stage, and the future of genomics promises to dwarf these initial achievements. In his new book 'Regenesis: How Synthetic Biology Will Reinvent Nature and Ourselves' George Church takes us through the developments that have occurred recently in the area of genomics, and also where these developments are likely to take us in the future.

When it comes to the current state of the field, manipulating DNA has already allowed us to produce organisms with new features, such as foodstuffs with novel properties, greater productivity and nutritional value, and resistance to pathogens. Over and above this, micro-species have been programmed to do such things as detect impurities in drinking water, produce electricity from waste-water (and purify the waste-water in the process), produce blood, produce vaccines, take pictures, and even store information. Indeed, the potential to use DNA as a store of information is already recognized to be the likely next leap in computer science, and is poised to initiate a revolution in informatics (just imagine storing all of the information in Wikipedia [in every language] on a chip the size of a blood cell, for a cost of $1 for 100,000 copies [p. 197]).

And, of course, the potential to manipulate genomes does not end with other species: it can also be extended to our own. Actualizing this potential is not far off, and includes such things as increasing intelligence, gaining full immunity to any pathogen (real or hypothetical), and dramatically extending the lifespan (if not removing mortality altogether).

In addition to manipulating genomes for the purpose of creating new biological features, the productive capacity of the genome can also be exploited to produce new substances and materials, such as chemicals, plastics, fuels, drugs, and vaccines. Successes in each of these areas has already been achieved, and the field is on the cusp of scaling-up these processes to an industrial scale. What's more, manipulating genes shows the promise of expanding the current repertoire of the building blocks of substances and materials to produce a whole new array thereof.

Church's book both is both invigorating and inspiring. However, it should be noted that the book is fairly technical throughout, and will only be easily-digested by a reader who already has a fairly deep understanding of the field. Having said that, an educated general reader equipped with a good amount of patience will have no trouble following the argument, and should learn a great deal in the process. Fantastic Book! Fascinating, Fun and Frightening!
By AmazonJavaJunki
I must agree with the above reviewer...this is an absolutely terrific book. Thanks to the superb review (and obvious enthusiasm) I opted to order this book on the spur of the moment while listening to a short interview with the author. Couldn't be more pleased. This book is absolutely fantastic. It's fun, it's downright frightening in some ways but it is fabulous across the board.

The author does a terrific job of making this somewhat complex topic accessible to the average reader. There are areas where I find myself wanting more information and a few areas of a bit less interest but overall, it presents a dramatic future view of the potential of synthetic biology including the promise and peril. Will it look exactly like this in the future...probably not but this gives great insight into the direction and trends rather than the specifics. Readers are likely to find at least a few things that are downright thrilling as well as some that are chilling to even contemplate. Clearly the legal limits haven't kept up with the emerging technology...an area that will need a lot of attention at some point in the future. Delightful book!

The Killing Zone, by Richard Dorney

On a tour of duty in the Helmand River Valley, the Grenadier Guards faced the toughest challenge of their lives. Carrying out patrols in the most fiercely contested land in Afghanistan, the Guards were under fire almost constantly. The summer of 2007 saw some of the most frequent and intense combat yet, beyond what anyone could have predicted. Based in isolated forward operating bases their nearest reinforcements were often miles away, down a track strewn with deadly roadside bombs. The Killing Zone is an action-packed and authentic insight into the real Afghanistan. This is what it’s like to deliberately draw fire on your own position so that your mates can escape an ambush, to experience the adrenaline rush of being the first in to clear a Taliban compound, and to rely on skill, loyalty, and quick-thinking to survive in one of the most dangerous places on earth.

The Killing Zone
By Carew
Honest, down to earth and without self-importance, Dorney has written a book which grabs your attention from the outset. He lets you make your own mind up about the politics and high level military decisions that steer the campaign, for this is not a book that carries any political or military statement. So what you get here is the straight forward story of a tour of duty, in which ordinary young men and women achieve extra-ordinary feats in the face of grave danger. Well researched and written in plain english, this is an easy read which allows you to enter the world of the Grenadier Guard infantry soldier (and his supporting elements) where you can vividly imagine each and every situation as it unfolds. It would be impossible not to be touched by the bravery and camaraderie that is shown not just by the Grenadiers but also by their Afghan counterparts.

Just finished reading the book, I really took my time reading it an absorbed every page. It is without doubt a Fantastic written account of what took place on the 2007 tour through the summer months. I dont think the civ pop even reading it could comprehend what everyone that was involved went through on a daily basis......the constant heat, the struggle for resupply an the constant ied threat. Massive well done to every Grenadier involved, R.I.P to everyone who didnt make it Home.

The Killing Fields

It is clear that Skid Dorney has spent a lifetime soldiering, and the picture he paints of the Grenadier Guards in Afganistan is vivid, tough and horrifying. But it shows Britain's young soldiers fighting a tough battle against the Taliban, governed by stupid regulations, never the less showing the spirit of a Regiment 350 years old. Makes you proud to be British.
