About the Author
Parallel to an international law career in Germany, Switzerland and the United States, Dr. Peter Fritz Walter (Pierre) focused upon fine art, cookery, astrology, musical performance, social sciences and humanities. He started writing essays as an adolescent and received a high school award for creative writing and editorial work for the school magazine. After finalizing his law diplomas, he graduated with an LL.M. in European Integration at Saarland University, Germany, and with a Doctor of Law title from University of Geneva, Switzerland, in 1987. He then took courses in psychology at the University of Geneva and interviewed a number of psychotherapists in Lausanne and Geneva, Switzerland. His interest was intensified through a hypnotherapy with an Ericksonian American hypnotherapist in Lausanne. This led him to the recovery and healing of his inner child. In 1986, he met the late French psychotherapist and child psychoanalyst Françoise Dolto (1908-1988) in Paris and interviewed her. A long correspondence followed up to their encounter which was considered by the curators of the Dolto Trust interesting enough to be published in a book alongside all of Dolto’s other letter exchanges by Gallimard Publishers in Paris, in 2005. After a second career as a corporate trainer and personal coach, Pierre retired as a full-time writer, philosopher and consultant. His nonfiction books emphasize a systemic, holistic, cross-cultural and interdisciplinary perspective, while his fiction works and short stories focus upon education, philosophy, perennial wisdom, and the poetic formulation of an integrative worldview. Pierre is a German-French bilingual native speaker and writes English as his 4th language after German, Latin and French. He also reads source literature for his research works in Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, and Dutch. In addition, Pierre has notions of Thai, Khmer, Chinese and Japanese. Some Great Ones and Some Not-So-Great Comprise Vol. 5 of Philip K. Dick's Short Works

Total disclosure: throughout my reading life, I’ve not always been the biggest fan of the works of Philip K. Dick. In fact, I’ve read some short stories that I found to be just painful slogs to get through. I can’t say that there’s any one specific reason that’s previously come to mind in why I’ve struggled with his works; rather I now think it’s that I just hadn’t had enough exposure to his singular style that presented a particular obstacle I couldn’t overcome.

Because he’s enjoyed such a revered reputation, I figured it was time for me to crack down and read a complete collection of short stories, perhaps taking in more and more of his work in order to better understand what it was specifically that put up a wall between me and this author. I’m glad I did, because I suffered a bit of an epiphany with WE CAN REMEMBER IT FOR YOU WHOLESALE: VOLUME FIVE OF THE COLLECTED STORIES OF PHILIP K. DICK.

See, I’d always thought of Dick as what I’d call an “idea man.” My impression was that his particular style required grounding in a strongly compelling idea, be it some futuristic technology or some exceptional problem that had to be overcome. About halfway through Volume 5, I realized not only was that a good summation of the writer but also he really didn’t “invest” in characters. At least, I’d argue he didn’t “invest” in them as much as author Ray Bradbury or Isaac Asimov or even Arthur C. Clarke did. This isn’t to say that he considered them baggage; instead, I think I realized that he just didn’t seem them as important as ‘the science fiction’ element OR the underlying theme of the work.

When I reached that understanding between me and him, all of a sudden I found it easier to get through his stories, even those that perhaps were hamstrung by an idea not as compelling as the last one he explored. This elevated my opinion of the collection here, and I’m glad to say that there are some real winners wrapped within only a handful of those ‘slogs’ I mentioned above.

For those wishing to know specifically what’s in here, I’m thrilled to give an accounting. This volume includes “The Little Black Box,” “The War With the Fnools,” “A Game of Unchance,” “Precious Artifact,” “Retreat Syndrome,” “A Terran Odyssey,” “Your Appointment Will Be Yesterday,” “Holy Quarrel,” “We Can Remember It For You Wholesale,” “Not By Its Cover,” “Return Match,” “Faith of Our Fathers,” “The Story To End All Stories For Harlan Ellison’s Anthology,” “The Electric Ant,” “Cadbury, The Beaver Who Lacked,” “A Little Something For Us Tempunauts,” “The Pre-Persons,” “The Eye of the Sibyl,” “The Day Mr. Computer Fell Out Of Its Tree,” “The Exit Door Leads In,” “Chains of Air, Web of Aether,” “Strange Memories of Death,” “I Hope I Shall Arrive Soon,” “Rautavaara’s Case,” and “The Alien Mind.”

Lastly, the volume is closed out by a collection of notes uncovered by the author that discuss the ideas in this book specifically. (I didn’t get much more from the notes, certainly not as much as I did from the better stories.)

For the record, “We Can Remember It For You Wholesale” is a classic. (That’s the foundation for the film TOTAL RECALL.) “A Little Something for Us Tempunauts” has a great idea, but it’s character bits could be a bit stronger. “The Pre-Persons” is nothing short of brilliant, though it’s subject matter will likely offend as many as it energizes. “The Electric Ant” is another great tale that could probably get adapted for a big budget movie someday if the dynamics can be worked out. And “Holy Quarrel” will make you think twice about the dangers of your PC computer achieving even the smallest measure of sentience.

It’s a great collection, and – if you can make it through a few of the lesser items in here – then you’ll no doubt become the same kind of convert to the man’s genius that I’ve become. Like I said, I don’t mean to put down Dick in any way: he’s clearly ‘one for the ages’ that deserves to be revered by audiences everywhere. It’s just that the sheer volume of the author’s output almost assured that he’d have more than a few misfires, and I think that happens when there isn’t as much investment in character as there is in the associated ideas.

Not just a cookbook -- an idea book!

Every now and then someone writes a cookbook that doesn’t just describe how to make their food, but helps you imagine creating your own food. It teaches you techniques that you could see applying to your own concept. It gives you examples of what someone — with a lot of patience and creativity — was able to create, and makes it seem accessible for you to embark on the same artistic adventure. That’s what this cookbook does. It’s not just a book of recipes, but a showcase and an invitation: here’s what I did, what will you do?

To be honest, I haven’t felt this way since Bakerella started the creative cake pop craze. Amanda isn’t the only person in the world to put something cool inside a cake, sure. But her innovation in the kitchen is inspiring. She makes surprise-inside cakes seem accessible to the home cook on her blog, i am baker, and now in her book as well.

This is a unique and one-of-a-kind baking book, filled with beautiful photography, recipes, stories, and memories. I have been reading it cover to cover for the stories, something I have never done in a cookbook in the past. I have already ordered several to give as gifts to some special people in my life. I love this book.

The complete "War and Peace" of appliance repair!

First off, may I start off by saying, this book must have taken a decade to write. It is simply huge (and daunting at first). It's pages are crammed packed with anything you may have for questions on the subject, right down to the customer interaction that you have with your homeowner. Gas, electric, small, large, the answers are here. It is written concise and very easy to follow. Any new repair tech. could bring this with him/her on the job and slip out for a minute to verify their findings with the information printed and it is like bringing a veteran to the site with you. Great for the pro who likes to study to keep sharp too!

Great investment for the do it yourself homeowner.

I had an old appliance repair but it was quite outdated. I was skeptical about this having relevant usable information that wasn't just theory. This manual explains the workings of almost all from stoves to microwaves and all the nuts and bolts about their operation. I repaired a friends clothes dryer with it the second week I had it and charged them $45.00 for the fix. About half of a service call and they were very happy too.
