Cobb joined the staff of the magazine Saturday Evening Post during 1911, and covered the Great War for the magazine. At the same time, he wrote a book about his experiences, published during 1915, titled Paths Of Glory. After a second visit to France to cover the Great War, Cobb publicized the achievements of the unit known as theHarlem Hellfighters, most notably, Croix de Guerre recipients Henry Lincoln Johnson and Needham Roberts. His article “Young Black Joe,” published on August 24, 1918 in theSaturday Evening Post and later republished in Cobb’s book, The Glory of the Coming, highlighted the discipline and courage displayed by black American soldiers fighting in Europe during World War I. The three-page article and half-page photograph reached a national audience of more than two million readers, and was widely reprinted in the black press.

hysterically funny

this book was written in the early part of the 20th century, when vocabularies were more interesting. This is more or less a collection of Mr. Cobb's thoughts on various parts of the anatomy, and the trials and tribulations those parts inflict. I found myself laughing outloud while reading parts of it, because the situations he finds himself in are still a part of life today! I'm so thankful to whoever is responsible for the preservation of this wonderful work.

I had to stop reading at various points in Cobb's story because I couldn't continue because I was laughing so hard I couldn't see the page. His anatomical discourse is not from comparative anatomy or any other scientific source, but rather from his own experiences and observations. These were for me more than simply funny, but also contained a commentary on attitudes regarding the different portions of our anatomy. The section on "Tummies" was wonderful.

The down side of his narrative was that on certain occasions, the awkwardness of his phrasing resulted in my having to double back and try to sort out what he was saying.

Despite these minor glitches, I still rate this short narrative five stars.

I will be reading more of Irvin Cobb's work.

Comical, to say the least!

This little book was not what I was looking for, nor what I expected. I was hoping to find a simple anatomy book with pictures. This little gem is a small collection of stories about various simple workings of the body and its basic parts. If you want to take a break and have a chuckle, check this oldie but goodie out.

Good introduction, heavy on the pretty pictures

This little book is packed full of astute information on the construction of the medieval cathedrals. The primary focus lies on the actual construction and the lives of the people who built them, all written by an elite scholar on the topic. The book is brilliantly illustrated with pictures from manuscripts and modern photographs of cathedrals, all of them relevant. As an introductory work, this book is exceptionally. It is bright, brilliant and written by someone knowledgeable in the field. It is very easy to read.

What detracts from this book is that it is too short, covers too many topics and just too little is present. At only 175 pages, many loaded in pictures and including the index, there just isn't a whole lot of content to be had. At times, it feels like it was designed as a tourists handbook, rather than an introductory work in the field. The addition of primary texts at the back is a nice touch, but this book had so much potential.

Great, brief read, but unfortunately it won't last through the afternoon. The pictures are nice, and the prices are generally decent. If you want a pretty introduction, read this. It may lack depth, but it is easy, accessible and cheap.

El libro en si está muy bien, pero el problema es que lo tradujeron al español, al parecer con un programa de traducción, entonces en algunas partes se pierde el sentido, no se entiende lo que quiere decir el narrador.

Me gustaría cooperar con la traducción, pero no se a quien le debo escribir, porque el libro de verdad es muy bueno y si lo ponen en práctica se los aseguro que no se van a arrepentir.

False Advertising & Bad English

First of all this book has only 120 writing topics so I don't know why it is titled 240 writing topics. I guess it isn't a math book. Having just begun to examine the book I discover it is published in Korea and clearly is authored by someone who speaks English as a second language. I have only read a few of the essays and have found mistakes in most of them. Here is an example: The next thing that makes getting children to swim early is that it will increase their confidence in doing many things on their own. Another example from the same paragraph: Children need to have confidence if they want to become successful adults, and learning to swim early can attribute to that. I give this book two stars because the essay topics are useful for getting started with writing practice. If nothing else this book would be great practice for a future editor.

Creative List, Well Done examples, not the best structure

As a teacher who is often fighting writers block when it comes to picking out essay topics this seemed like a great solution!

A lot of the topics are great (and I may use some) but the essay samples themselves followed a very specific structure that I haven't seen taught before. If you are buying this to help improve your writing grade be sure you check with your teacher before implementing any ideas. If you are just trying to make your own writing more supported then this is great for some at home writing practice.

This book may be just what you are looking for in your life, however it wasn't what I was looking for in my life.

Great aid

I am an International student and I bought this book as aid for the TOEFL. Indeed, I found this book and its sample essays being really useful. It helped me to gather tons of writing topics and ideas, further it enhanced my AE essay structure. If you are preparing for TOEFL or IELT, you may know how timing is a vital element in all the parts. In the independent essay, I couldn't beat the 30', until I had purchased this book. In other words, the outline essay contained in this book guided me to achieve a good essay within the time limit. (I got 26!). To me, it's worth every penny!

For a practical understanding of strength...

Zatsiorsky's book is a well presented foundation for learning the concepts behind strength training. The book is primarily directed towards a coach's perspective, but anyone can benefit from it.
The textbook layout is straightforward and includes data gathered from trained athletes. It begins with some basics of strength conditioning. Less knowledgable readers will benefit from these first chapters. The book then progresses to cover training, timing and exercising. Zatsiorsky includes some decent ideas about injury prevention as well.
Overall, it's not an excyclopedia with all the answers. The goal is not to provide generic routines for readers, but to provide the basis for readers to custom design their own routines. I've found this to be a very useful. My thanks to the author.

Excellent book exploring many facets of strength training.

The author has an extraordinary grasp of both the theory and practice of strength training. It is not, however, for those frightened of a bit of science. One of the more enlightening aspects is his explanation of the relationship between force and speed and the consequences of coaches failing to understand that relationship.
Zatsiorsky has a depth of knowledge related to the strength requirements for many sports and activities gained from his many years experience in the former Soviet Union.
This is probably the best book I have yet read relating to strength training.

Decades of experience

This book is based on decades of methodically documented training of Russian athletes. Rather than use hypothesis of what training methods SHOULD work, found so commonly in U.S. training literature, what you'll read in this book is scrupulous analysis of what actually worked and what didn't work. There is no equivalent in the U.S. athletic training system; no one has tracked and scientifically analyzed the training of U.S. athletes like the Russians did with their centralized training programs.
This is a must-read book for serious sports strength and conditioning coaches. It's a little too technical for the average fitness trainee, however. The format is a bit like a scholastic textbook, not a how-to book.
