In the Key of Perfect

Surely there are hundreds of Christmas carol books. I've encountered perhaps 70 to 100 of 'em. A few, such as the carols in the legendary "Fireside Folk Song Book" are splendid: easy to play yet with musically attractive arrangements, printed so the pianist isn't squinting, and in a singable key. I was looking for a gift for a beginner, though. and, through luck and the helpfulness of Amazon custom-reviews, I found it!

The "Ultimate Christmas: 100 Easy Seasonal Favorites" is an all-time best, in my experience.

Among its virtues: large print and excellent contrast for visibility, arrangements simple enough for the first year pianist yet easy to augment for the more experienced, choice of key signatures where many voices sound good, neither too high nor too low, and, mirable dictu---easy guitar chords.

Further, only two keys are used throughout so the book is gloriously free of the bane of enthusiastic but not highly skilled friends-and-family singing: a different key signature for just about every song. Piano, guitar, and voices sound wonderful in these arrangements without rehearsals, first time around.

True, highly skilled, professional musicians may wish for more complex, elaborated arrangements with more harmony indicated for the voices.

If, however, you are looking for a family-friendly book of carols for piano, guitar, voices----this may be it!

Now let me praise the selection: almost all the traditional songs are here, as well as the newer classics from movies and popular music. The price is excellent for the completeness, the musicial choices, and the quality of paper and binding. I'll go to this title again (and probably again) as gifts for first-second year pianists and guitar players, and I'll get another copy too, for myself, arranged in the key of perfect.

Good Enough for Me

I'm an older player/learner who practices in spurts around many activities. I wanted something that would not get me too frustrated, but would also allow me to have some sense of accomplishment. I'm not a good pianist, play for myself and not others, and cannot be a good judge of the musical accuracy or sophistication of this music. I've read that this editor in other easy piano books makes mistakes with notation. Better musicians have complained that the editor sometimes makes original tunes seem unrecognizable. To my weak ears, this collection and its arrangements are just about right. I'm also very pleased with the traditional selections--and the price was right.

This was a "required" book for nursing school. I am now in my final quarter and have had assigned readings from this book only a handful of times (it was mostly required as a reference for our paper we had to write on palliative/hospice care of dying children). Every time I read the chapters from this book in preparation for lecture, my instructor says something that contradicts what the reading says. When I say "But Wong's says ___," she informs that the info from that book is outdated. I really wonder why we even have assigned readings from this atrocious book.
In conclusion, this book is full of errors and you are better off going to the AAP for more up to date information about peds.

Good if you have a PhD and are fluent in medical terminology and Latin. Bad if you're a nursing student.

I'm not happy with this book at all. Although it is very detailed, it's almost detailed to a fault. They introduce acronyms without even specifying what they stand for or what they mean! Although the information is very dense, it has an underlying expectation of extremely well-versed medical jargon and background knowledge.

I find myself looking up dozens of terms each chapter. The book does have some great collections of clinical signs and symptoms, which I do appreciate. However, each page is so poorly thought out and doesn't flow in a way that makes it easily comprehensible. Hate it, and I want to burn it..if only I didn't rent it, and if only I didn't need it for my class.

This book was required for my PEDs class. It is very detailed, specific, and has lots of writing, charts, etc. If you're familiar with nursing books, you will recognize 'Lippincott's' writing style and understand what I mean. There is a lot of information in this book, but I still had to do some additional research & resources to clarify some things and get better visuals. I PASSED the class, but I don't think it was because of this book, necessarily. The book on its own is an excellent book, but, PEDs is a challenging nursing concept and you just have to stay on track.

you will enjoy this book but please be prepared for the roller ...

I am unsure on how to rate this book. I am emotionally drained from reading it. I was so invested in the characters and the story line and the hits kept on coming. I am trying to be objective considering the fact that it is the 4th in a 5 book series so I knew there would be no satisfaction at the end.
This book spans over a 3 week period in their relationship so it can't be resolved. If you understand the process of healing from sexual abuse you will get what she was getting at. She needed to develop that side of Gideon POV and that process is emotional and difficult to get through. Having said that, the Brett Kline thing was disappointing and I wish it would have been left out.
If you are invested in this series , you will enjoy this book but please be prepared for the roller coaster ride and understand that is purely character development and no significant advances in the storyline.
So in a direct appeal to Silvia Day. If you are at all reading your reviews. Thank you for showing the male perspective of a sexual abuse survivor and the consequences if you have not dealt with it. But please ........... for book # 5 let them both find their strength and claim their life. Finish their story line where it was worth for us to invest 3 years into this series. Skip the cookie cutter way out and span it over a few years not just weeks. If there ever was an extensive Happy Ending needed it would be in this series. Considering the time investment of the readers. I sincerely hope to see "One with you"published within a few months. Not years!!

This Series Started Off So Strong.......

Please be aware there will be small spoilers concerning the plotline.

It is such a shame......this series started out so strong. Bared To You and Reflected In You were absolute perfection. Entwined With You (book 3) was just okay for me, but I understood going into it that is was a transition book so I didn't expect too much to happen. The best part of EWY was Gideon and Eva solidified their relationship. Looking forward to Captivated By You, I had very high hopes. I had read some interviews with Ms. Day and watched her on Youtube explaining books 4 and 5 would focus on Gideon's issues and I was excited about the prospect of finally really digging into Gideon.

Unfortunately that is not how it played out for me. Right off the bat, Eva is dealing with some left over emotions concerning Brett Kline. I am like....what??? I thought that particular door closed for Eva in EWY at the Golden video premiere. She realized she loved Gideon completely and although she may have a sexual chemistry with Brett, their relationship would never resume. She belonged with Gideon. I felt the only lingering storyline concerning Brett was the sex tape....guess I was wrong. This bothered me for a couple reasons. I felt this drama was contrived only to be a filler.....I felt this issue was resolved also Eva's conflict over Brett seemed to set her back a few steps.....taking her back to that desperate girl who used sex to try and keep him. That is not the Eva that has been growing stronger and stronger in the past 3 books. I didn't get angry with Eva, but I truly didn't understand why Ms. Day chose to take Eva's character in this direction. I did get frustrated with the fact it seem to take Eva much too long to really deal with the Brett situation and would have preferred to see it wrap with more quickly.

Something different happened in Captivated By You, rather than just experiencing Eva's point of view Gideon had a turn to express his inner thoughts. It should have been awesome crawling into Gideon's head, but honestly Gideon and Eva's voice seemed to be exactly the same. I really couldn't distinguish between the two "different" views. In the past books, I thought Ms. Day did an excellent job of allowing readers to really understand Gideon even though we only saw him through Eva's eyes. And while it was nice to hear from the man himself, I am not quite sure I liked it. Gideon is not really good at telling Eva anything and he was doing things, manipulating situations and people without communicating with Eva. I found that I didn't like that aspect of him. He knows how much Eva hates that. Gideon has seen how secrets have stressed Eva and Monica's relationship so I was frustrated seeing him do the exact same thing knowing full well that these actions were going to cause problems later on. The best part to Gideon's point of view was being about to see how truly damaged he is from his past. I think I expected more growth from Gideon in this book. He has slowly started making changes to heal and confront his past in the previous books, but I really wanted to see more of that in this book and I didn't get that until the very end of the book. I am sure in book 5 Gideon will really start to the process, but I expected more.

Captivated did answer some questions that have been floating around in my head, but not all questions of course were answered. I thought some loose ends were tied up a little too quickly. For example, I have been wondering what the hell was going on with Nathan's bracelet and basically it was answered in two pages.

When I finished CBY, I turned the page and saw the title for book 5 and I can tell you quite frankly I don't feel any excitement for the next installment. I don't have that dread of waiting a year or six months for it either. I feel let down; as far as I am concerned books 3 and 4 could have been combined. I feel like the past 2 books have not taken the characters far enough and the series seems to have lost that momentum. I don't know if that is because of the long wait between installments or if that the characters are not as vibrant as they were in the beginning. I will definitely be reading the last book; it just won't be with the enthusiasm and excitement I had before. I had no problem with Ms. Day extending the series by 2 books, but I don't feel like extra books have added anything to series or strengthen the characters or the storyline.

Save your money, nothing new happening in this book, except to drive the Crossfire Series further into the ground.

*Possible Spoiler Alert*

*Yawn* Was there a purpose to this book? Unless the purpose behind this book was an attempt at driving this series into the ground, then congratulations, it was a success. This book is similar to ordering a box of candies from a company that you've trusted in the past, and they send you a huge box, and you think that it's going to be filled with all sorts of goodness, but then you open the box, and it's filled with nothing but packing peanuts, and you keep searching thinking that you're going to find something, and finally after going through all the packaging, you find a caramel. The packing peanuts in this book are the sex scenes, and try as you may to search through all of them, but you aren't going to find a caramel, maybe a piece of butterscotch candy. Because I enjoy erotica, it pains me to say "Enough with the sex", please, we get it, we also get that they need each other to survive, Gideon is the yin to Eva's yang, he can't breathe without her, his body hurts not being inside her, they feel each other's presence before they see each other, their skin aches when they part, WE GET THIS, IT WAS ESTABLISHED OVER AND OVER AND OVER AND OVER AND OVER AND OVER IN ALL THREE PREVIOUS BOOKS. Seriously, they have sex before work, while on the way to work, while at work, and then after work, at this point I would be happy just to see either one standing at the water cooler talking to a co-worker about the last episode of The Walking Dead, effing anything but the two of them effing. It would be nice to read one of having an independent scene without the other waiting in the shadows. It would be interesting to see Eva going to California without Gideon trailing, as it would to read about Eva going to lunch without Gideon waiting a table close-by, it would have been interesting to read any scene without them together, because as we all find out, they can't be together without engaging in sex. That's is all there is to this book is the sex, and although I like sex scenes, it would be nice to have a little storyline to go along with it. I skipped through dozens of pages because the sex is a yawn fest.

This series began with beautiful, wealthy, interesting yet flawed and damaged people, but has turned into a series about beautiful co-dependents that I seriously doubt can take a p*ss without the other one holding his/her hand. I now loathe Cary, instead of him being a supporter and friend to Eva, all he thinks about is how her every move is going to impact him. This book is essentially the three of them discussing sex, making each other miserable, whining and complaining, but can't be away from each other for longer than an hour. C'mon, how ridiculous is it that Gideon wants Cary to move in the penthouse that he and Eva are having remodeled so that Cary doesn't feel deserted. Gideon has turned into a pansy, frantic schoolgirl, but instead of passing notes of "Do you like me, yes or no?", he sends texts. Corrine having sex with Angus would be more interesting than to reading this, watching paint dry on the walls would be more interesting than this story.

As with book three (Entwined with You) in this series, nothing was resolved, nothing new occurred, it was basically a repeat of book three. The name of this book should have been: Entwined with You Version 2.0, or Gideon Has Sex With Eva Again and Again and Again and Again and Again and Again and Again and Again.

Save your money folks, nothing new going on here. I included a "Possible Spoiler Alert" because I wasn't sure if saying nothing new occurred would be a spoiler.

Gender Diversity: Crosscultural Variations

In this lean book, Serena Nanda uses ethnographic accounts to illustrate how diverse cultures construct their sex/gender systems. By doing so, she reveals that these systems are not always binary; male and female, man and woman. Her descriptions of masculinity and femininity in India, Brazil, Polynesia, Thailand, the Philippines, within some Native American tribes and in contemporary Euro-American cultures challenge what some believe is "natural" about gender and, by extension, sexuality. By presenting gender variations historically and as they are currently understood and displayed, Nanda reveals the social, historical and cultural forces that have created changes in these sex/gender systems.
This engaging book has eight short chapters. The introductory chapter lays the foundation for Nanda's argument by defining key terms (e.g., gender diversity, sex, gender, sexual orientation, transgendered, sex/gender identity, etc.) with which readers must be familiar to understand gender variation. Chapters 1 through 5 provide ethnographic accounts of multiple genders among North American Indians, the hijra and sadhin of India, the travestís, bichas, and viados of Brazil, the mahu in Polynesia, the kathoey of Thailand and the bayot/bantut/bakla in the Philippines. What some readers will find most interesting and provocative are accounts of how contact with Western cultures influenced existing gender constructs in these cultures. For example, North American Indian men who dressed like women, did "women's work" and were sexually intimate with other men were called "berdache" (an Arabic term for a male prostitute) and demeaned by early Spanish explorers on religious grounds.
Chapter 6 focuses on sex and gender diversity in Euro-American cultures. While the present-day view is that there are only two sexes and two genders, Nanda reveals other models of sex/gender that are part of the Euro-American heritage. In the final chapter, Nanda summarizes important ideas from the preceding chapters and compares sex/gender variations. This further exposes the extent to which sex/gender variants challenge the binary concepts of sex, gender and sexuality in Western cultures. She rightly concludes that "the evidence argues against any one-way, cause-and-effect relationship between homosexuality and sex/gender diversity, and a specific sexuality may well emerge from a sex/gender variant role, rather than the reverse...the association between sexuality and sex/gender diversity cannot be assumed, but rather must be examined within specific cultural/historical contexts" (Nanda 2000, 101-02).
For those who want to learn more, Nanda includes a reference section that highlights materials that should be of particular interest to "students" of gender. She also provides a list of selected films, explains how each complements materials presented in a particular chapter and where to obtain the film.
Some readers may be disappointed that there is little coverage of female gender diversity in this book. However, this shortcoming is not Nanda's. As she explains, socialization, patriarchy and other factors allow male gender variance to occur more frequently than female gender variance. To her credit, where female gender variance is well documented (e.g.,among North American Indians, the s dhin of India and Euro-American variations) Nanda provides ample coverage.
In short, this book is a refreshing addition to the literature on gender, sexuality, cultural studies and gay and lesbian studies that should not be overlooked.

Gender and Diversity Cross Culturally

I enjoyed learning about individuals whose gender and sexuality varies from the heteronormative gender categories in most Western societies. This text was used as a fundamental piece in understanding different expressions of gender and sexuality cross culturally, through an anthropology course focused on the distinction between gender, sexuality, and socially constructed roles attributed to gender. I liked how the text focused on the experiences of such gender and sexually variant individuals from cultures/societies in Philippines, Brazil, India, Native America, and many others. Even though heteronormative relationships in which men reign supreme over women the relationships of those not within such relationships mimics the structure of such male/female relationships, in some ways which are more destructive than others. One major issue I had about this text was that it was focused on the experiences of men, whether transgender or homosexual, which didn't leave much room for the experience of women as transgender or homosexual and that is not alright, to explore a skewed/ biased experiences of gender, sexuality, and social roles. One major thing that I learned from this text was that an individual's gender, sexuality, and social roles do not have to be the same, however there is a lot of overlap, but it was important for me to learn this distinctions in an ever changing world in respect to non heteronormative identities whether through expressions of gender or sexuality. This text would be a great addition for any women's studies or anthropology course which investigates the differences in gender, sexuality, and social roles. Or for individual exploration into these social issues.
This would be a good text for a college course or any other educational courses, as well as informal ones too. This text came well before Amazon's expected delivery date in great condition. Also, I returned it for Amazon credit at the end of the semester since Amazon does have the tradeback program which is great for students to earn Amazon credit.

Interesting intro to gender diversity around the world

Cultural differences about gender roles and sexuality has always fascinated me, so I thought this looked like a good read. It was pretty good, but I feel I would have liked it more if I didn't already know about some gender diversity in other cultures beforehand! It's a very good introduction to several cultures' takes on gender, sexuality and the roles that go along with them. At times the style of the author bored me or felt a bit dry, but the shortness of the book (roughly 100 pgs) made it easy to read. I'd recommend this to people interested in gender studies, sexuality, anthropology/cultures, sociology, and maybe even psychology.

A conservative case for civility

This is a collection of essays drawn from more than 50 years of writing by Univ. of Chicago sociologist Edward Shils. Shils was a conservative thinker - in the traditional meaning of the term conservative. He viewed civility as a constraint on divisive individual beliefs and irresponsible representations of self interest. While written at the level of a treatise for graduate level theoreticians, much of the work is enjoyable reading. Some of the essays are dated, but even those have their practical insights, one quoting a wise politician that, "the survival of a parliamentary system requires the constant dining with the opposition." The 1995 essay on nationalism makes the case that erosion of the fabric of the national society will erode civil society as well. The 1989 essay on The Modern University covers some of the same ground as his 1979 Jefferson Lecture by analyzing the reciprocal rights and duties between a democratic government, a society and its universities. The summarizing final essay underscores that civility in public discourse is a mode of political action based on collective self consciousness. It is heart-warming to read the words of a learned man who had firmly held beliefs make a strong case for civility. If more people who have strong views about political issues would read these essays, they might learn to channel their advocacy with a larger dose of civility.

Grand Slam!!!

Wow! Read this (or better yet, see it) and marvel at the wonders of great playwriting. Dazzling writing + a great story = amazing theatre. The characters jump off the page. This is NOT a "gay play", but a story about choices, courage and consequences. Squeezed in there is a monologue on baseball that is destined to achieve classic status and would make anyone want to head out to the ballfield. Somehow all of the elements of this play just work, though I defy anyone to explain how, in simple terms. It doesn't seem complex, but it is. This is what great writing for the theatre is all about...still alive and well in the 21st century: smart, provocative, fun and moving! Thank you Richard Greenberg!

Not your average day in the ballpark!

Richard Greenberg walks a delicate but intriguing line in his play "Take Me Out". He tries to avoid cliches and stereotypes in a play that is all about cliches and stereotypes of all sorts. The end result is an intrguing, compelling, and often funny look at how baseball and in a larger sense, America, handled, is handling, or will handle her diversity.

Take Me Out starts out about a talented gay baseball player, Darren Lemming of the ficitonal Empires, who has already come out of the closet to his team and the world before the play begins. Instead of falling into the now thankfully tired cliche of the team and coach having to "deal" with Darren's sexuality, Greenberg allows the team to deal with the news quickly and move on with the story, including his literary and intelligent best friend Kippy, who narrates the play.

Bring in Shane Mungitt, a relief pitcher who struggles to put two words intelligibly together, and in turn, revives the Empire's sagging baseball season. Through his gruffness and lack of communication, Shane clearly becomes the play's antagonist, and does so quite publicly and unintentionally, on television during an interview. Shane spouts off a quick string of prejudical labels that shock and dismay his team right at the end of act one. Of course, act two picks up with the team having to deal (or not deal) with Shane's obvious bigotry, which leads to a series of surprising and shocking events that somehow make sense in the larger sense of the play.

Greenberg never allows his play to fall into a stereotypical trap of victimization. Throughout the play, Darren retains his leadership and assertiveness, and even publicly rebels against any sympathy garnered from the public by Shane's outburst. It's refreshing to read a gay character with a spine, who relies on no one but himself.

However, almost as a comic relief, Greenberg imbued his play with one of the most memroable stage characters ever written, the incomperable Mason Marzac, who plays Darren's financial manager. Normally staid, boring, stiff, and uninteresting, Greenberg has turned this character on its ear by making him a nelly queen, and one of the most hilarious characters to boot. Almost immediately, Mason is the character that draws in the audience, and you love him for wearing his emotions on his sleeve. Even more amazing, Mason becomes a baseball convert, and drags the audience into understanding why people love baseball, or even its grander meaning in American society. How rich!

Take Me Out is an incredible play for many reasons, and I highly recommend reading it, or if you are lucky enough to be near a local or national production of the play, see it. It will be a very enlightening, entertaining night at the theater!

Best thing since Sorkin.

I have seen this play three times already, once in previews and twice in the same week last June, and plan to go back the next time I am in NYC because several cast members have changed since the summer. I confess that I have not read the script yet, but as the genius of the play is more in the writing than in the acting (although that was wonderful, too), I believe the script can be reviewed by watching it. I plan to buy it soon.
I believe that Take Me Out is the best show currently on Broadway. To people who are overly focused on musicals and do not consider it, I say that the monologues are the equivalent of any big ballad they could hope to see. The dialogue is the equivalent of Aaron Sorkin (A Few Good Men, or, for television, Sports Night and The West Wing). It is intelligent, witty, and capable of turning progressively darker while never feeling out of touch with the humorous lines.
It is not a baseball show. To continue the Aaron Sorkin comparison, a love of sports is no more of a necessity to enjoy Take Me Out than to enjoy Sports Night. No matter how much I love Marzac's monologues on the wonders of the game, I would no more actually watch it played after seeing the show than before. That does not prevent enjoying the description.
It also should not be dismissed as being "just" a gay show. Yes, bigotry is a major issue of the play, both in terms of homophobia and racism. It is also a show about friendships, and varying degrees of strength and of honesty in them. Of course, there is the question raised by a few plot twists near the end, which I will not spoil, but regarding Kippy's theory that everything is for the best if people can put their true thoughts into words. In most situations, honesty may make the strongest friendships, but the truth can be ugly, or bring about ugly reactions from hatred. It is a play about how few simple answers there are, and that not every question is answered at the end is appropriate.

Hidden Treasure

Hidden in a genre full of raunchy porn pretending to be good fiction I stumbled on Captive Prince. I always look at the reviews but take them with a grain of salt. Although there were only nine reviews they were all 5 star. I decided to take a chance. I'm so thankful that I did. This book is so much bigger than it's classification as erotic fiction would imply. I was completely engrossed from the start. The use of language coupled with imaginative world building will leave you desperate for more. I know it's sometimes hard to separate the wheat from the chaff but you will not be disappointed if you buy this book.

I just finished the last page of this wonderful book and the third one isn't out yet! I love this series! Compulsively readable I could not put this down. While reading the first volume I instantly purchased the second book before I was halfway through the first. This series has everything. Politics, intrigue, fascinating characters, snappy dialogue. S. U. Pacat, you got me! (: I hardly ever write reviews. Almost never, but this was so good I had to just let everyone know about it.

Gorgeous writing

*profound but unavoidable spoilers*

Amazing character driven tale. If it's remotely your cup of tea - a brilliant, beautiful, cold, manipulative prince with hidden vulnerabilities and the honest honorable hero who loves him (the love is the spoiler - it's a slow boil romance but really... no reader can fail to be aware where this story is going) and the politics and violence they face - it's as good as it gets. Plenty of plot that goes very nicely and well developed characters abound and the hero is quite nice and about 100% less annoying than these kinds of heros usually are but really this book is all about Laurent (said brilliant, beautiful, manipulative...), if you love a Laurent kind of character do not miss this novel.
